Mazda has been an industry leader that offers stylish, performance-oriented vehicles and high-grade car parts in a variety of segments. Founded in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, the automaker started out manufacturing tools used for machinery before switching over to automobiles. After the brand changed their name to Toyo Kogyo, Ltd. in 1927. the first model, the Mazdago, a uniquely designed open wagon that combined elements of a motorcycle and small pickup truck using three wheels was developed. Founder Jujiro Matsuda chose the term "Mazda" in honor of the Zoroastrian god of good and light. Further production of a fleet of vehicles followed, but Mazda instead had to redirect its efforts towards Japan's participation in World War II, essentially halting the emerging brand's momentum.
1960 finally saw the arrival of Mazda's first legitimate entrant, the R360. A two-door coupe, the R360 would provide the template for what Mazda vehicles would be known for: compactness, efficiency, and affordability. Other models such as the Carol and the brand's line of B-series pickup trucks soon followed. The US began importing Mazda models in 1970, with the first one to reach American shores being the RX-2, which would give way to the 616. The '70s were an ideal time for Mazda to establish itself stateside, as the oil crisis proved to be a perfect time for American car buyers to be introduced to the brand's fashionable, fuel-efficient lineup. The RX-7 was introduced towards the latter part of the decade and became an instant hit due to its Wankel rotary engine and sports car quality. But despite its strong roster, Mazda had been struggling financially. The Ford Motor Company wound up investing in the Japanese automaker in 1979 and in turn, would aid Mazda in refurbishing its line of B-series pickup trucks. Mazda likewise assisted Ford in the development of the Escort, one of the US brand's most successful models of the '80s.
After enduring a turbulent beginning to the 1990s, Mazda rebounded nicely. An exciting development came in 1994 when Mazda announced it would use a Miller cycle engine for the Millenia, marking the first time an engine like this would be used. Other models such as the Navajo (closely related to the Ford Explorer), the MX-6, and the MX-3 were three of the brand's other more notable models of the decade. The MX-5 Miata, Mazda's roadster, also provided a boost, giving drivers a cost-effective yet performance-capable alternative to higher-priced imports. Currently, Mazda still rules its share of the road with several stylish, top-quality vehicles and genuine Mazda parts recognized all over the world. The Tribute, a compact SUV, has stood out despite heavy competition in this segment. Its teammate the CX-7 has been nearly as impressive as a midsize crossover. Sedans such as the Mazda 6 and the Mazda 3 are why the brand is still considered to be on top of its game, as both have been big sellers for a wide demographic of car buyers.

Mazda has always showcased an impressive line of street-capable models that serve a myriad of functions. Beginning with models such as the modernly original RX and the popular Tribute to the Mazda 3 or the dynamic Millenia, there's no doubting the brand's versatility. Freeway performance or suburban joyriding - Mazda cars and SUVs just don't discriminate due to their fantastic level of consistency. The Mazda Takeri concept is scheduled to debut the next month at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, yet it seems that the manufacturer can't help but give the public a sneak peak of what to expect. The latest concept employs the company's new Kodo design language, and it's a preview of the next-generation Mazda 6. According to Mazda Motor Corp., the Takeri aims to bring a new level of allure and strength to mid-size sedan styling.
The car will feature Mazda's first regenerative braking system. When the driver releases the braking foot, the system will transform the kinetic energy into electricity during deceleration, and store it in the capacitors. It will be then used to power the concept's equipment (audio system, air conditioning, lighting, etc.). This will decrease the engine load, and consequently, save fuel and lower the emissions. The Takeri will come with the company's new Skyactiv-D clean diesel engine, which is a 2.2L twin-turbo four-cylinder with a lowered compression ratio, mated to the new 6-speed automatic transmission, with i-stop engine-idling-stop system, and new chassis technologies that are to ensure comfortable ride and unparalleled performance.
The Takeri, together with the Shinari concept and Mazda CX-5, will be officially released at the 42nd Tokyo Motor show late November.
This week, Mazda North American Operations officially announced its Mazda Total Advantage Program. Within this program, the company offers its customers a new pre-paid scheduled maintenance program.
According to Mazda, the Factory Recommended Scheduled Maintenance can save up to 25% compared with paying for services separately. The MTA is available for all 2007 and newer model years, for purchased, leased, certified pre-owned, and used Mazda vehicles. Costs vary by a dealership, vehicle, and contract length (1 to 5 years). The customers are offered to choose between two maintenance plans, namely Schedule I (Normal Driving Conditions) and Schedule II (Unique Driving Conditions). The program additionally includes a full service inspection at every maintenance visit.
The primary goal of the MTA is to increase owner loyalty and service retention. At the moment, customer retention is a real struggle for Mazda. In the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Customer Retention Study ranked the brand 21st out of 34 brands as only 37% of the customers return to Mazda for the next purchase while the average index for the industry is 48%.
Mazda Motor Corporation has announced its plans for a new production facility in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. According to the official press-release, the company has signed all formal agreements and started preparations to construction works that are set to begin this fall.
The plant with be the fourth overseas manufacturing facility for Mazda; currently the Japanese company has factories in the U.S., China and Thailand all shared with Ford Motor Co.
The Mexico factory will serve as a compact vehicle assembly site mainly for Central and South America. Mazda will share the investment, 500 millions dollars, with trading company Sumitomo Corp. The production facility will build Mazda2 and Mazda3 models, and will include both vehicle and engine assembly plants. The plant will have initial capacity to produce 140,000 cars per year.
Mazda has yet to decide what to do at the AutoAlliance plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, after it ceases the Mazda6 production in mid-2012.
Ahead of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show that will start in March, Mazda teared another piece of wraps off its new Minagi Concept. Other than the new Minagi CUV will showcase the companys latest development - Skyactiv drivetrain technologies - there are not many details on the concept available at the moment.
The sleek compact crossover badged Minagi is going to freshen Mazdas SUV segment in the U.S., which has been represented by the sales outsider Mazda Tribute during the past several years. The Mazda Minagi is the second concept to be based on the companys new design language dabbed Kodo, first seen on the Shinari concept. The new compact crossover features a refined styling with front fascia resembling the latest Jaguar XJ. Mazda says the Minagi also uses a pack of weight-saving tricks to enhance fuel efficiency.
The automotive market observers and fans of the Japanese automaker will be able to see whats under the hood of the Skyactiv-based Minagi in the very beginning of spring at the Geneva Salon.
