The Mazda CX-9 is a full-size crossover SUV that made its debut in time for the 2007 model year. The CX-9 started off constructed off of Ford's CD3 platform along with the Lincoln Zephyr, Ford Fusion, and Mercury Milan. Unlike other crossover SUVs, the CX-9 is noted for its wagon-like appearance and above-average performance for its class. When the vehicle premiered, it was equipped with optional all-wheel drive (AWD) and a 3.5L V6 engine good for 263 horsepower along with 249 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. For 2008, its second year on the road, the Mazda CX-9 underwent several changes, most notably to the powertrain. The first year's 3.5L configuration was updated with a new 3.7L V6 engine that pumped out 273 horsepower with 270 pounds-per-foot of torque once again directed through a six-speed automatic transmission. Also for this model year, the Grand Touring trim level displayed a new blind-spot warning system.

2009 welcomed in another round of updates for the Mazda CX-9 parts. Standard across the board was a trip computer and Bluetooth connectivity. All-wheel drive variants received a trailer-tow package while the CX-9 Grand Touring was given a standard remote garage door opener as well as an automatic-dimming rearview mirror. For 2010, the multi-information display panel was supplemented with a rearview camera. Likewise, the navigation system was upgraded with real-time traffic. On the outside of the vehicle, both the rear and front fascias were revised, including a new grille and other styling cues of Mazda CX-9 parts.
