A compact SUV with full-size character, the Mazda Tribute hit US dealer lots for the 2001 model year. When it premiered, the Mazda Tribute sported a base 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine which got credit for churning out up to 130 horsepower directed through a standard five-speed manual transmission (although a four-speed automatic was offered as an option). Trim levels at the model's introduction were the DX, DX V6, LX V6, and ES V6. As the names suggest, trims with the V6 suffix sported a more powerful 3.0L V6 engine that delivered 203 horsepower. For its second year on the road in 2002, the Mazda Tribute DX parts received a brunt of the changes, including new alloy wheels and remote keyless entry. Shortly thereafter, the DX V6 was dropped from the lineup and the LX was made available with antilock brakes. Step-tubes became an option for all Tributes across the board.
In 2003, trim levels for the Mazda Tribute were the DX, LX, and ES, with only the LX and ES equipped with the V6 engine. Most of the other updates for the Tribute this model year had to do with the interior parts, as the dash was decorated in a two-tone color scheme and new trim was placed in and around the cabin (aluminum for the DX and LX; faux black wood for the ES). For the ES trim, a new "cold package" was offered that presented amenities such as heated seats and mirrors. A year later, Mazda introduced new options for drivers to choose from, including an automatic-dimming rearview mirror and body-colored door edge guards. 2005 ushered in a bevy of upgrades, most notable in which was the new base engine. Gone was the previous 2.0L configuration and in its place was a 2.3L four-cylinder capable of around 150 horsepower. ABS brakes became standard for all trims, as well. Trim levels were now branded according to the letters "i" and "s" (i- four-cylinder; s- V6).
Trims were updated once again to Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The Tribute went virtually unchanged until 2008, when Mazda ordered a full redesign that saw the exterior receive an influx of smooth lines while the inside was improved with higher-quality materials and a slight increase in room. The powertrains were upgraded for 2009, as the base engine became a 2.5L four-cylinder (171 hp with 171 pounds-per-foot of torque). The bolder V6 also saw an increase in horsepower, as its number rose from 203 all the way up to 240 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission took over (although the Sport trim came with a five-speed manual). 2010 brought on a minimal number of changes, although the Grand Touring was offered with a new garage door opener and a special automatic-dimming mirror that features a built-in display for the backup camera.
The Mazda Tribute holds steady as one of the most talked-about SUVs on the market. Compact, athletic, and ready to rumble, the Tribute blends reliable performance with modern style and comfort. Even in a highly-competitive segment, the Tribute has managed to make itself a legitimate contender for the crown, as drivers from all backgrounds have chosen this machine as their go-to vehicle for both work and play.
