    About Subaru


    Subaru is known for producing automobiles and auto parts that deliver a mixture of economy and sport with a friendly price tag mixed in. Founded in the early 1950s, Subaru introduced its first model in 1954, the four-cylinder P-1. The P-1 is a notable vehicle because it also the first Japanese vehicle to have a monocoque body, which integrates the body and chassis together. Four years later, Subaru premiered the compact 360. Referred to as the "ladybug", the Subaru 360 used a small air-cooled inline 2-cylinder engine and brought popularity to the marque, staying in production for over a decade. In 1961, Subaru unveiled the Sambar, a compact truck that served the narrow Japanese streets well. A Sambar van followed closely behind. The rest of the '60s saw other models such as the 1000 and the R2, a city car, make their arrival. Subaru North America was created in 1968, clearing the way for Subaru models to make their way into US showrooms.

    By the 1970s, Subaru had added the Leone, Rex, and Brat to its lineup. The Leone started off as a front-wheel drive coupe but was soon available as a sedan, wagon, and even a pickup. What made the Leone stand out even more was its four-wheel drive capability, which was at the time especially unusual for a sedan or wagon. Subaru had established a reputation for presenting vehicles and Subaru parts that were seen as both "quirky" and flexible, and the automaker kept the ball rolling come the '80s. But as the '90s approached, the Legacy made its way onto the pavement. The Subaru Legacy was a departure from older Subaru models, as it was a midsize car that provided a kick in performance. It also differed from other cars in its class due to its standard all-wheel drive and new flat-four engine configuration.

    Subaru began making even more noise come the '90s, taking home the prize at the World Rally Championship three consecutive years (95, 96, and 97). The SVX rolled off the line in 1991 and received favorable reviews as another Subaru model with a penchant for performance. The Impreza followed up and impressed with the turbocharged WRX, which would later go on to become a favorite for tuners and auto enthusiasts. But overall Subaru sales were beginning to slump as the industry started embracing sport utility vehicles. Injecting a boost into the brand was the Outback, which premiered in 1995 as Subaru's first entrant into the burgeoning crossover SUV segment. The Forester and the Tribeca, two crossover SUVs, have also helped Subaru flourish in recent years.     Subaru Teases the BRZ Concept STI
    Subaru Teases the BRZ Concept STI

    While the production version of the Subaru BRZ is supposed to bow at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the company decided to tease the public with another version of the concept – the BRZ Concept STI. Subaru of America, Inc. announced that the new concept version will be unveiled at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in a couple of weeks.

    The BRZ is a joint development project between Toyota Motor Co. and Subaru. Toyota is responsible for the styling and Subaru is in charge of the powertrain development. Unlike previous concept cars, which didn't showcase the design in full opting for a clear plastic mock up, the STI will be shown with the bodywork. Designed by the Subaru Tecnica International division, the STI sits 4.7'' lower than any other Subaru. It comes with a unique rear fascia and an aero-tuned lower front spoiler. To add down-force, the STI is equipped with a rear wing. Other highlights of the concept are hawk eye headlights, fin-shaped fog lamps, and a hexagonal front grille. Just as usual with the STI's, the car will be offered with blue paint job, the only thing is that in this case it'll be a new version of the Subaru's classic blue, named WR Blue Pearl II.

    The concept is powered with a new Subaru Boxer FA engine (2.0-L naturally-aspirated four-cylinder horizontally-opposed) specifically designed for the BRZ sports car. The engine is placed low and rearward in order to allow for a blade-like hood design. The concept features an STI-tuned suspension, front engine/ RWD layout, 18'' wheels and Brembo brakes. Together with the carbon roof, the chassis is claimed to deliver what Subaru calls the ultimate handling.

    Subaru has just announced its five-year Motion-V business plan. The company plans to cut costs, improve fuel efficiency by 30 percent, and increase the sales by 37 percent worldwide.

    The main goal of the new business plan is to boost up sales across the world. Subaru hopes that the Motion-V plan will help the company grow its sales to 900,000 units by 2016 (this year the company plans to sell 633,000 cars). In addition to that, Subaru wants to become the leader in safety performance by using their risk-avoidance technologies, such as the EyeSights active driving assist system, and pre-crash safety features. There are no details of the cost cutting strategies, and the only thing known is that the company is determined to cut costs by 20%.

    The key element of the Mition-V plan are four new vehicles that Subaru wants to introduce by 2016. The first new model to arrive is a sports coupe produced in collaboration with Toyota. The vehicle is scheduled to debut by 2012. The next model is said to be a hybrid based on the Hybrid Tourer Concept unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show. The information about the other two models is vague at this stage. One of the vehicles is rumored to be based on the Impreza XV concept, and the other one may be a new crossover will probably replace the Triberica.

    Subaru has revealed its intention to apply the new Impreza Concept vivid styling cues to its entire lineup over the next few years.

    The Subaru Impreza Concept was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show a year ago and at that time the company said it heralded a design language that would shape all future Subaru models. Therefore, such typical Impreza's features as prominent shoulder line, blowy wheel arches and deep front air intakes are likely to inspire a range of new-generation models, including the Subaru's version of the Toyota FT-86.

    The design alterations will come along with fresh engineering solutions, like an all-new boxer engine and a hybrid version of the Legacy that will use Toyota's hybrid technology. The latter will come with the THS II hybrid system, the one used in the previous generation of the Prius, which will be mated to a 2.5-liter version of the company's new FB-type boxer engine.

    The Japanese automaker won't stop its efforts here, as the company also plans on changing the transmission department. Subaru thinks of eliminating torque converter automatic transmissions, creating more efficient systems. The Legacy will be the first guinea pig for this change.
