Based on the Subaru Impreza hatchback, the Subaru XV Crosstrek made its debut at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show as the Subaru XV Concept. Being basically a redesigned Impreza and offered as a replacement for the outgoing Impreza Outback Sport, the XV Crosstrek is a 5-passenger, 4-door crossover with a steel unibody construction and an AWD layout. The vehicle measures 103.7'' in the wheelbase and is 175.2'' long, 70.1'' wide and 61.8'' high, which makes it the smallest sport utility vehicle in the Subaru's lineup. In the U.S., the sales of the Subaru XV Crosstrek are scheduled to begin no earlier than fall 2012, while the European version of the CUV is to hit the showrooms in spring 2012.

The only powertrain that the Japanese automaker brings stateside with the Subaru XV Crosstrek is a Boxer 2.0L DOHC 16-valve flat-4 engine, capable of 148 hp at 6,200 rpm and 145 lb ft of tq at 4,200 rpm. It can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission, which Subaru calls Lineartronic. Similar to the Subaru Impreza, the Subaru XV Crosstrek uses McPherson strut with a lower L-arm at the front, and a double-wishbone rear suspension. The CVT version of the crossover is claimed to return 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The company says that a manual-equipped version accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 10.5 seconds, while the CVT model reaches it in 10.7 seconds. The top speed of the XV Crosstrek is around 116 mph, and its CO2 emissions are 0.67-0.73 lb per mile. For the driver and the passengers to feel safe, the Subaru XV Crosstrek comes with a lot of standard safety parts and features, such as Vehicle Dynamics Control System that monitors slippage, as well as seven advanced SRS airbags, retracting pedals and whiplash-reducing front seats that ensure driver's protection.

The exterior design of the Subaru XV Crosstrek strongly reminds of the Impreza hatchback. The major difference is that the XV stands 3.3'' taller, so its ground clearance reaches 8.6''. Compared to the Impreza, the A-pillars of the XV are pulled forward by 7.9'' to maximize the cabin space, and the H-point is positioned higher, which makes the crossover easy to get in and out of. The car features redesigned hood, which is more aggressive and sharp-cut. Definitely, the Crosstrek comes with such traditional Subaru parts as the hexagonal grille and hawk-eye headlights. The grille was a bit enhanced with a continuous chrome bar that stretches right below the Subaru logo. The wheels wells are topped with the black cladding, which continues down under the XV and surrounds the rear fog lights. The flashy 17'' starfish alloy rims add to the vehicle's look and emphasize the body's aesthetics. The roomy cabin and spacious seats can accommodate up to five occupants. The seats are offered with the fabric upholstery that is accented with a sporty mesh. The list of standard Subaru XV Crosstrek parts and equipment includes a 6-speaker audio system with a CD player, Bluetooth capability, AM/FM tuner, and a USB jack. The CUV offers 22.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 52.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Confident in motion, the Subaru XV Crosstrek proves that practical things can be fashionable. With the responsive handling and dynamic performance, this compact SUV easily overcomes busted pavement and slippery roads, and provides you with the smooth and satisfying ride. It handles with a responsive texture, which has earmarked it as an entertaining drive for both style and performance. Tuned up to challenge the chaotic cityscape, the Subaru XV Crosstrek is perfect for daily trips and any adventure you've planned. From a distance and up close, the this crossover makes a lasting impression.

Installation went fine. Lifespan was terrible (1 1/2 years - 20k miles). Not impressed.
