    About Acura

Since 1986, Acura has made an impression on the automotive industry due to the stylish, efficient, and performance-based design of their vehicles and parts. Acura enjoys the distinction of being the first Japanese luxury brand to set up shop in North America. As a division of Honda, Acura had the benefit of debuting in 60 dealerships, giving the company a decided advantage right from the beginning. Acura started out with the Legend and the Integra, two models that would later go on to influence the entire Japanese luxury car industry thanks to their economical comfort, sleek design, and stylish accessories. Over twenty years later, not much has changed, as Acura's presence is continuously felt on the roads today.

Acura introduced the NSX in 1990, representing the ambitious direction of the company at the time. Powered by a V6 engine with rear-wheel drive, the NSX was also the world's first all-aluminum sports car. It received high marks from critics and drivers alike for its style as well as reliability. This model, although short lived, helped Acura form the basis for the brand's next fleet of vehicles. The nineties would see the reemergence of the Integra thanks to the youthful tuner demographic and the inception of an alpha-numeric system for names of models (RL, EL, etc.). Acura continued to stay above water, but it wasn't until the birth of the TL in 2000 when the automaker began to experience the kind of steady success it enjoys to this day. The MDX, a pioneering crossover SUV and the TSX, an upscale sedan designed in the vein of the BMW 3-Series, followed shortly thereafter, creating sustainable buzz around Acura. With the TL, MDX, TSX, and RDX leading the charge into the new millennium, Acura enjoyed a momentum shift that has been fully embraced.

Acura models have displayed consistent sales figures throughout the last decade. The MDX, first produced in 2000, has averaged over 53,000 units sold per year since 2001, an extremely solid figure considering the fragmented size of the crossover SUV segment. Over the past six years, the TL and the TSX have both seen a great deal of success as well, averaging 65,250 and 31,203 units sold respectively. For an auto company that concentrates on economical luxury vehicles and does not offer a wide selection of SUVs and trucks, the fact that Acura has been a staunch competitor to upscale European imports as well as domestic favorites is a credit to the creative quality in which the brand has been established.

Bending the lines between luxury, style, and speed, Acura has become a favorite for those who seek a little more out of their car. Every vehicle shares a certain identity that makes Acura very much its own brand, be it sporty performance or that higher-end feel which is recognized by drivers of all backgrounds. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) was spied driving around in the hot-looking Acura for several scenes during the shooting of the Avengers. It became clear from Auto Blog that the vehicle was produced specially for the Avengers film. Looks like the legendary NSX supercar is back. While Acura is Honda's US-only luxury brand, the model's appearance is rather important for fans waiting to see Honda come back to the supercar arena.

It was stated by Honda earlier that the automaker wanted to create a supercar which breaks the mould along with creating new technological package. The new NSX will use the 2001 Honda Dual Note concept's all-wheel-drive hybrid drivetrain. The vehicle will hide a VTEC V6 3.5-3.7 litre engine under the hood, driving the rear wheels and an electric hub motor in each of the front wheels.

Boasting the impressive torque, it could really be the supercar so much expected by Honda fans. The car will go on sale by 2014. As for Honda, its officials keep on denying that Tony Stark's vehicle is the new NSX's representative.

Someday Acura executives decided to create an entry-level hatchback popular with the young racing crowd, and did it in 2006. Nowadays Acura wants to move from the segment in which Cadillac, Infiniti, Lincoln and Lexus compete in, reintroducing the RSX hatchback.

Up till now the company keeps everything in the secret, though it is known that the development of the new hatchback has already begun. Recently there appeared the information about the hatchback's powertrain, it is known that it will be equipped with Honda Civics' Si’s 201 horsepower i-VTEC 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine.

If the Acura wants the new hatchback to be taken seriously the Honda's engine needs to be the base one offering a second more powerful powertrain. Any other technical characteristics are still unknown.

Acura Plans to Expand Model Range, Possibly Goes Down-Market

It appears that the global recession saved Acura from falling into abyss. The economic slump made it clear that luxury vehicle market would be the first to dry up, and Honda’s luxury brand was forced to abort its plans to transform itself into a first-class luxury automaker.

“The direction we were going became irrelevant within 60 days,” said Steve Center, marketing boss for American Honda in a recent interview with Automotive News.

According to the company executives, Honda will persevere with Acura and will be investing more resources in it during the next few years. Particularly, the Japanese automaker wants to develop new, likely down-market products under the Acura nameplate. At the recent dealer meeting held in Denver, Honda reps promised that the company will expand the Acura lineup with new hybrid powertrains, but also into new segments. However, Acura will stay committed to producing performance-oriented vehicles, which are also more attractive for customers in terms of maintenance and ownership costs.

Many automotive experts consider that Acura will try to meet up the new, low-petroleum market paradigm with a small hatchback or coupe. That being said, a refurbished version of the much-loved RSX badge, rumored to use the CR-Z platform, is likely on the horizon.
