The Dodge Charger has come in various shapes and sizes since it debuted in 1964. It has been a roadster, a front-wheel drive subcompact hatchback, and most recently, a sleekly-styled full-size sedan. The Charger was developed initially as a show car in relation to the Polara. From there, Dodge redesigned the Charger and equipped it with lot of luxury accessories for the Dodge Cahrger to be a competitive answer to the Ford Mustang, taking with it a powerful V8 engine that would see a HEMI upgrade in 1966. After making some trips around the track on the NASCAR circuit, the Dodge Charger became the first vehicle to offer a factory-installed spoiler. Needless to say, this model’s heritage is one of speed, style, and innovation.
1968 saw an aggressive restyling effort by Dodge. The front fenders and rear quarter-panels were shaped in what was called “Coke bottle styling.” A high-performance R/T (Road/Track) package was offered with an optional 426 HEMI. The Dodge Charger remained at the forefront of the American muscle car segment throughout the next decade, with several overhauls to the interior and exterior accessories and design. Despite the success of the previous Charger Daytona, which featured such parts as a fiberglass nose, a modified tail wing, and a 440 Magnum engine, the industry towards the muscle car was beginning to shift. Eventually, Dodge shifted the focus from performance to luxury, as the 1975 Charger was based on the Cordoba. The Charger would still be able to show off performance-based drivability, but its image of a roadburner was starting to be phased out. After Carroll Shelby took over design of the Charger in 1983, styling was the name of the game. Racing stripes, an updated nose, upgraded brakes, and more responsive handling were the specialty, and it was what kept the model afloat during an era of change.
Nowadays, the Dodge Charger is enjoying a renaissance. Sharing a platform with the Chrysler 300, the current Charger also has many similar parts to that of its cousin, the Magnum. Although a four-door sedan, the rear doors of the Charger are styled into the body to help make them less discernible in order to reveal a more muscular image. Engine options vary from a 2.736L V6 to a 6.1L HEMI V8. Of course, the Dodge Charger still boasts highly respectable sales figures due in large part to the model’s fair pricing within its segment as well as its penchant for aftermarket modifications. With more optional parts for Dodge Charger on the way in the coming years and already backed by a highly-respected legacy, this car continues to be one of America’s most prized automobiles.
There are not many vehicles that have managed to capture the imagination of the buying public in recent years the way the Dodge Charger has. The Charger is designed to go for the "afterburn", shedding away blacktop from the pulsating tires with enormous authority-that's how you make an impression. The body-style gives way to an image of a commander addressing his troops: confident and battle-tested. The prestige, the firepower, and the style all lead to why the Dodge Charger is an undeniable force that cannot be overstated.

It looks like Chrysler doesn't want to focus on just one car while its presence at Detroit Auto show this year. Apart from the much expected Dart, the automaker is bringing two new vehicles, with Dodge Charger Redline being one of them. Tuned by Mopar, the Redline edition is based on the R/T model and will be revealed with the extensive use of carbon-fiber trim. It actually appears with three different tuning kits by Mopar. The Stage One offers a carbon fiber chin spoiler, added to the Charger's already aggressive front fascia, carbon fiber door scoops, a three-piece carbon fiber rear spoiler, and 20-inch Black Envy wheels.
The Stage Two and Stage Three are all about performance upgrades. The Stage Two includes a cat-back performance exhaust for more power and more sound, a front-tower cross-brace and tower brace caps for revised stability and better handling, and high-performance Mopar brake linings. The most impressive kit is Stage Three, which offers the high-performance version of 426 Hemi V8 crate engine. Built to be lighter (with weight about 100 pounds less than the standard cast-iron engine's) and more powerful, the unit is designed for racing use only. The Redline Charger concept was already showcased earlier, at the 2010 SEMA show.
Mopar is in charge of manufacturing auto parts and accessories for Chrysler during 75 years. It looks like it is not enough for Motor Parts company. Recently Mopar has unveiled its new project, which gives the Dodge Charger new face.
"The Mopar 11 Charger takes the head- turning factor up a few notches," said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Groups service, parts and customer-care brand. "By adding some of the most distinctive accessories to an already strong performer, weve created a special-edition car for enthusiasts."
The 2011 Dodge Mopar Charger Special edition features the Pitch Black metallic paint with the contrasting Mopar Blue racing stripes. The designer also adds custom five-spoke 20-inch wheels with Goodyear F1 Supercar tires. The interior elements, such as premium floor mats, pedal covers and front-door sill entry guards, demonstrate the Mopar logo. Other interior changes include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and unique leather seats, decorated with a specific blue thread. The beast is powered by the 370 hp 5.7-liter HEMI engine, coupled with a five-speed W5A580 automatic transmission.
Mopar plans to produce only 1,000 units. 100 out of 1,000 vehicles will be delivered to Canada. The rest 900 Chargers will be sold in the U.S. The 2011 Dodge Mopar Charger Special edition is priced at $39,750.
The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 was presented at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. It is a family sedan that is based on the redesigned 2011 Charger.
The vehicle comes with upgraded 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine, producing 465 hp and 465 ft-lbs, and five-speed automatic transmission. The new Dodge Charger features some innovations intended to improve the fuel economy by using only four of the engine's eight cylinders. The current SRT8 gets 13 mpg city and 19 mpg on the highway.
There are also significant exterior changes. The Dodge Charger SRT8 receives the new large grille with blacked-out sections, new four-inch dual exhausts, 20-inch forged and polished aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, and threatening headlights to name a few. New SRT8 exterior styling details give the vehicle a more aggressive look than the base version. Inside, the vehicle has more aluminum trim, heated and ventilated front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with SRT logo, and a Harmon Kardon sound-surround system.
