The Lexus LX arrived in time for the 1996 model year as a full-size luxury SUV, one of the first of its kind. It was constructed off of the same platform as the Toyota Land Cruiser and in its first year on the road, was offered as the LX 450, due to its engine configuration (as is the case with most Lexus models' names). Under the hood was a 4.5L inline six-cylinder engine good for approximately 212 horsepower and 275 pounds-per-foot of torque mated to a standard four-speed automatic transmission. The model was also equipped with permanent four-wheel drive and a center-locking differential as standard. Inside the Lexus LX was a standard 50/50 split third-row seat which presented space for seven passengers. As for the model's overall dimensions, the LX 450 measured in with a wheelbase of 112.2 inches, a width of 76 inches, a height of 73.6 inches, and an overall length of 189.8 inches.
In 1998, Lexus rolled out the LX 470, which would replace the 450 in the lineup over the next decade. At its launch, the LX 470 sported a 4.7L V8 which produced around 230 horsepower directed through a four-speed automatic transmission. Once again, permanent four-wheel drive was included standard. Many of the same features from the previous LX 450 were carried over inside the model and a new "Sport" setting for the model's adaptive suspension was introduced. A couple of years in, the engine got a boost in horsepower up to 235 and a five-speed automatic transmission began to take over in 2003. 2006 is when the LX 470's last major crop of changes were implemented, as the 4.7L engine was supplemented with variable-valve timing, which in turn, gave the 470 a substantial bump up to 275 horsepower and 332 pounds-per-foot of torque (although that number would be scaled back a little the following year due to SAE revised numbers).
The Lexus LX 570 premiered for 2008 with a robust 5.7L V8 that churned out up to 383 horsepower geared to a six-speed automatic transmission. As with the previous editions of the LX, the LX 570 is based off of the same chassis as the Land Cruiser and shares many build characteristics with that model. For the LX 570, a new electronically controlled suspension along with adaptive ride height is included, as are leather upholstery, wood trim accents, adaptive xenon HID headlights, a power liftgate, four-zone automatic climate control, a backup camera, and Bluetooth capability. Additional options such as remote keyless entry, a rear-entertainment system, cooled front seats, and heated rear seats could also be had. Compared to the first generation, the LX 570 is wider, longer, and taller, despite sharing the same wheelbase measurement. The LX 570 debuted with a width of 77.6 inches, a height of 75.6 inches, and an overall length of 196.5 inches.
In a segment plagued by clones, the Lexus LX stands out. Brandishing a more sleek and refined look than most luxury SUVs, the Lexus LX has a presence people take notice of quickly. Smooth performance due to solid Lexus parts, rugged off-road toughness, and a lush, comfy cabin is the story with this elegant standout. It's no wonder why drivers have become attached to this ride.
