One of America's most successful sports cars, the Chevy Corvette got its start in 1953 as an attractive two-seater known more for its look than its performance. All that changed in 1955, as a V8 engine, featuring advanced power-enhancing parts, became offered and within a couple of years, the Corvette was hitting 60 miles per hour in less than 6 seconds. Throughout the next four decades the Chevy Corvette would take on a variety of different forms for each era, from the Sting Ray of the '60s to the C5 of the late '90s. Each generation is a little bit different from one another but the same emphasis on performance and top-quality parts has always remained the same.

The C5 Chevy Corvette premiered for the 1997 model year and stayed in production until 2004. With a top speed of around 171 miles per hour, it was also the sleekest and curviest version of the model to be produced. The C5 was equipped with an LS1 5.7L V8 good for approximately 345 horsepower and mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Horsepower was increased to 350 in 2001. And although the model debuted as a coupe only, a convertible version was released in 1998. The Z06 replaced the ZR-1 using an upgraded LS6 engine capable of 385 horsepower, which was increased even more to 405 for the last two years of the C5's assembly.

The current Chevy Corvette is as full of American muscle as it gets. Available in three trims (base, Z06, and ZR1), even the standard Corvette shows off heavy-duty performance with a 6.2L V8 with 430 horsepower. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission. The Z06 steps it up a notch with a 7.0L V8 that showcases over 500 HP but it's the top-level ZR1 that burns up the pavement. Thanks to a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine, the ZR1 offers 638 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed manual. There are three choices of suspension: standard, Magnetic Ride Control, and Z51, with each different suspension designed to provide a smooth ride to go along with the penchant for performance the car is known for. As for the exterior accessories, this generation of the Chevy Corvette displays exposed headlights for the first time since the early 1960s along with a smaller rear compared to the previous generation. The C6 Corvette has also received numerous awards, including being named to Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best List (2008) as well as being dubbed a Consumer Guide Best Buy (2008).

2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype Unleashed

New Corvette is not an every day thing. Knowing that and the fact that the automaker along with its designers, Pratt and Miller and Grand-Am developed the 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype, the world expects a lot from this car. While the model is to participate in the Grand-Am Road Racing Series next season, it is making its debut at the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway on January 28.

According to Mark Kent, the General Motors Racing Director, the automaker co-worked with chassis builders Riley, Coyote and Dallara while developing the 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype. The model shares with a roadgoing Corvette nothing, but a few styling cues including a split rear window. And while the new Corvette might not be quicker than the predecessor, it is definitely more attractive. As stated by the Chevrolet vice president, Jim Campbell, racing and performance are the main principles of Chevy, and Corvette Daytona Prototype's participation in Grand-Am is a great opportunity.

There are four teams which will run the new 'Vette: SunTrust Racing, Action Express Racing, Spirit of Daytona Racing, and GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing. Looking back at all of the Corvette's trophies, we can only get excited and expect more from new race car. The 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype will go through testing on November, 16.

Chevrolet Corvette Anniversary Edition

GM Company announced the release of a new edition of Chevrolet Corvette. This vehicle is dedicated to the Centennial anniversary of the Chevrolet brand. Chevy Corvette is a legendary model of the American auto industry. Corvette is an incarnation of muscle traditions of this brand. The engine of the Centennial Edition does not have any modifications, all the special features are concentrated in the design.

An anniversary Corvette differs in color – Carbon Flash and by the exclusive wheels with inserts and brake calipers both in red. A wide range of wheels is available for different versions. The logo will be changed slightly – and one of the flags will be fitted with the number “100”.

Interior will also be modified. The material of the upholstery will be changed to the black leather with red stitching. Adaptive suspension with Magnetic Selective Ride Control system will be installed on this vehicle. The anniversary package can be ordered for any Corvette version from 430hp Grand Sport and up to 638hp ZR1.

Corvette Engineers Made First-Ever Car Sunscreen

Featuring fantastic weight-to-strength ratio, carbon fiber is massively used for fast cars, such as Chevy Corvette. Until now, exposed-weave carbon fiber, which delivers unique aesthetic for racing vehicles, was considered impossible to put on retail cars because the sun degrades the material on the exterior surface. Painting over the carbon fiber was the only solution. But, it didn't suit Corvette engineers. Working on their own time, they have come up with a “sunscreen” for the Corvette ZR1’s carbon fiber weave.

"Everyone said it couldn't be done, and we were crazy for trying," said Mark Voss, senior design engineer for the ZR1.

Basically, the “sunscreen” is a glossy, UV-resistant clear coat. Not only does it protect the carbon surface against harmful sun rays, but it also shields the fiber components from chips and scratches. It took Mark Voss and his team three years to develop such a finish.

"Our challenge was finding a way to give our customers exposed-weave carbon fiber with the durability they have come to expect from a Corvette," Voss said. "Other automakers have opted for fake attempts at a carbon-fiber look. With the Corvette ZR1, we wanted to give customers the real deal."

Corvette’s technology breakthrough is already available on the 2011 ZR1.
