In 2002 the Freightliner Trucks commenced production of the Freightliner M2 series, which was a spiritual successor to the original Business Class product line. The Freightliner Business Class M2 medium-duty trucks came as a completely new line of Class 5-8 trucks, designed to provide operators with unparalleled efficiency of all Freightliner parts and great operational productivity. Offered in various cab configurations, bodies and chassis-mounted equipment, the Freightliner's Business Class M2 medium-duty trucks are used for a variety of applications such as towing and recovery, pickup and delivery, public services, food and beverage delivery, government services, garbage collection, emergency and fire services.

The Freightliner Business Class M2 is available in two configurations: a 106-inch BBC (bumper-to-back-of-cab) version, offered with extended cabs and screw cabs, and a 112-inch BBC model. The Business Class M2 106 is the first truck offered in the new product line. The Freightliner M2 106 is provided with 850 square-inch radiator and 4.3L MBE900 engine as standard equipment. Its turbocharged in-line 4 cylinder engine produces 150-180 hp. The optional 6.4L 6-cylinder MBE 900 engine develops from 190 hp to 300 hp. There are also available the Cummins engine with the power output of 260-380 hp and the Caterpillar 3126 developing 175-300 hp. All engines are offered with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions from Mercedes-Benz, Eaton Fuller and Allison, that come with Smart Shift option. The truck is produced in three cab configurations: day cab, extended cab, and crew cab. The driver-friendly cabs provide roomier interior, comfy accessories, and excellent ventilation and heating/cooling systems. The driver's area is ergonomically designed and features stylish such Freightliner parts as dash and LED-back-lit gauges that are easy-to-read. The Business Class M2 106 trucks are designed for maximum comfort and safety.

In 2003 the Business Class M2 lineup was added with a new truck model, introduced at the Mid-America Trucking Show. New Freightliner M2 112 truck provides higher capacity and power that are required in various applications. The range of cabs includes regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab. The Business Class M2 112 is available as a truck or tractor, and features front axles range from 12,000 pounds to 20,000 pounds and rear axles up to 46,000 pounds. The AirLiner suspension and heavy-duty TufTrac suspensions are optional Freightliner parts. The standard power-train consists of 1,200 square inch radiator and MBE 4000 engine developing 450 hp. There are offered Eaton-Fuller 10- or 13-speed AutoShift transmissions, Eaton-Fuller manual transmission, and Allison HD transmission. Freightliner Business Class M2 112 is a durable medium duty truck, designed with the heavy-duty power and strength.
