Maserati is known for giving its drivers a taste for both sports car excitement and luxurious presence with just a twist of exotic flair. Founded in 1914 by six Maserati brothers Carlo, Bindo, Mario, Ettore, Alifieri, and Ernesto, the original goal of the company was to manufacture custom racecars and car parts the family could use in competition. The roaring '20s is when the Maserati name started to make its mark on the racetrack, carrying over the success into the next decade. Maserati was sold in part to Adolfo Orsi, a well-respected Italian businessman in 1937. After the sale, Maserati was moved from Bologna to Modena. More victories throughout the racing circuit followed, including a win at the Indianapolis 500.
Maserati debuted its first road series, the A6, in 1947. The 1.5L inline six-cylinder A6 also gave way to other variants including the A6GCS and the A6G. Come the 1960s, Maserati filled out its lineup with sporty offerings such as the Sebring, a two-door coupe or roadster, and the Mistral Coupe, a descendent of the 3500GT, one of the brand's successful racing-inspired models from the '50s. In 1963, the Quattroporte premiered as Maserati's first four-door. Towards the end of the 1960s, Citroen purchased Maserati, although Orsi stayed on as president. The partnership paid dividends right away, as Maserati was able to roll out the Bora, the marque's first mid-engine car. However, the remainder of the '70s was hard on the automotive industry due to the oil crisis, leaving performance-oriented brands like Maserati struggling to stay afloat. Alejandro de Tomaso bought Maserati in 1975 after Citroen declared bankruptcy. Under Tomaso, Maserati promptly released the Quattroporte III.
As the '80s settled in, Maserati unveiled the Biturbo, a two-door coupe with a 2.0L V6 engine and two turbochargers. In 1988, the Karif rolled off the line. US sales were disappointing though, and by the beginning of the next decade, Maserati stopped exporting cars to America. Fiat took over the brand in 1993 and a few years later, sold off half of it to Ferrari before Maserati's former rival finally wrested full control in 1999. The company turned over once again in 2005, dissolving from Ferrari and partnering with Alfa Romeo under the Fiat banner. Maserati has rebounded with a roster of cars and car parts that are big on both performance and luxury. Now in its fifth generation is the Quattroporte, the automaker's premier four-door luxury tourer. 2007 saw the arrival of the Gran Turismo. Based partly off both the Quattroporte and the Ferrari 599 GTB, the Gran Turismo is a two-door coupe that boasts a V8 engine, six-speed semi-automatic transmission, and an aggressive, aerodynamic body shape.

The line-up of the luxury Maserati vehicles will be added by a brand-new SUV, which means that the Porsche Cayenne will soon have a very strong rival. Production of the Italian-shaped crossover is planned to begin at the Jefferson North assembly plant early next year.
The crossover is to be built on the Grand Cherokee platform. It is still unclear whether the Maserati will have the shorter wheelbase version of the platform or the longer version, which now underpins the Dodge Durango and is supposed to be used for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The suspension will be a sophisticated independent system with the adaptive front and rear damping. The company's designers say that the Maserati SUV will not be that much off-road focused. The SUV will be designed with a 'patrician nose' and the 'wavy waistline,' in keeping with the Maseratis recent designs. The interior will boast Italian luxury with leather-upholstered seats and wood accents.
It was rumored earlier that the Maserati SUV would be powered by the Ferrari V8, but according to the latest data, it will get a Chrysler 465-hp HEMI 6.4-L V8. This is not surprising as HEMI gives more torque, which is better for the SUVs, and what is even more important, it already powers the Grand Cherokee SRT8. The Chrysler's engine will perfectly fit the Grand Cherokee-based crossover, and moreover, it'll help to keep the vehicle's cost down as Ferrari's engines are not that cheap.
The next-generation Maserati Quattroporte, expected to bow later this year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, will be the first of three new models Maserati plans to add to its lineup. The Italian automaker is reportedly working on a smaller sedan and a luxury crossover, powered by a Ferrari engine.
The successor to the Quattroporte exotic sedan, code-named M156, has been designed in-house and is inspired by the design language of the GranTurismo coupe and convertible. The power for the new QP will come from an improved version of the existing 4.7-liter V8. The vehicle will also increase in size and luxury in order to better compete with the likes of Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.
Maserati is also working on a mid-size luxury sedan with a code name M157, which is aimed to become a rival to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class models. This new entry-level Maserati is expected to arrive closer to 2014 with a price tag around $75,000.
In the next two years, the company plans to add a luxury crossover to its lineup. The new SUV is likely to share platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, although it will have more potent powerunits (at least of the engines will be shared with Ferrari), and an interior at the top of chic.
With the redesigned Quattroporte and two new models, Maserati hopes to increase annual sales to around 20,000 units, which is quite an ambitious target taking to account that last year the company sold 5,675 units.
