The Volkswagen Routan is a minivan that the German automaker first began offering in 2008. It is constructed off of the Chrysler RT platform along with Chrysler Town & Country as well as the Dodge Caravan. In fact, the model is assembled at the same Windsor Assembly plant as the two US-badged models. The Routan was first introduced at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went formally on sale later that year. At launch, the Routan was made available in three separate trim levels: the S, SE, and SEL, and the base engine was a 3.8L V6 good for 197 horsepower directed through six-speed automatic transmission. As for the model's dimensions, the Routan measured in with a wheelbase of 121.2 inches, a width of 76.9 inches, a height of 68.9 inches, and an overall length of 202.5 inches.
The S and SE versions of the Routan featured the base 3.8L V6 under the hood. The top-level SEL trim showed off a bolder 4.0L V6 configuration good for 253 horsepower and 262 pounds-per-foot of torque. As for amenities, the base S displayed full power accessories, air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry. Heated side mirrors, a six-speaker CD stereo system with MP3 capability, a removable second-row bench seat, and a 60/40 split third row bench. The Routan SE shows off 17" wheels, tri-zone manual climate control, and eight-way power driver seat, removable second-row captain's chairs, power-sliding rear doors, and a premium stereo system. Top-of-the-line SEL models boasted the larger 4.0L engine, power-adjustable petals, heated front and second-row seats, a power liftgate, and Bluetooth. Other options could be obtained via an entertainment package that offered satellite radio, a DVD navigation package, a backup camera, a DVD player, and third-row flip-down screens.
Safety features for the Routan included standard four-wheel antilock brakes, a depowered airbag, a passenger airbag, head airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags, traction control, and stability control. Due to the typical Volkswagen construction of the vehicle along with the inclusion of full-length side-curtain airbags and frontal airbags, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Routan as "Good", which is the highest score a vehicle can achieve. In similar crash tests, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Routan all five stars for passenger, driver, side-impact front, and side-impact rear crash ratings and four stars for rollover. The Volkswagen Routan has made a quick impression on the driving public ever since its arrival and was named a Consumer Guide Best Buy following its first full year (2009).
The Volkswagen Routan is not your ordinary minivan. It is efficient, edgy, and classy - attributes that any driver can appreciate. The right mix of luxury and the Routan parts' performance is what sets it apart from others in its class. It should be no wonder then that Volkswagen Routan owners typically like getting involved in customizing their rides. And when they do, CARiD.com's selection of Volkswagen Routan accessories is always the first place they turn.
