Even though a significant number of trucks and SUVs are equipped with receiver hitches, many hitches go unused and never see towing duty. But even on rigs that regularly pull a trailer or camper, the hitch is idle more often than not. Smart people in the automotive aftermarket thought these vacant hitches could be put to good use and so developed the bike carriers, cargo carriers, and other hitch mounted carriers you’ll find elsewhere on our digital shelves, as well as the hitch mounted spare tire carriers displayed here.
If you have an interior mounted spare, carrying the spare on the hitch will give you more cargo room. Mounting taller and wider off-road tires? A matching spare might be too big for your OE tire carrier, but we have hitch mount carriers that can handle tires up to 40” tall. If you have a front hitch, a hitch carrier will give you tire size capacity and easy access leaving your rear hitch free for towing, but we also offer rear hitch carriers that allow towing as well as full access to the bed or interior without removing the tire.
No matter whether you have a pickup, van, SUV, Jeep, or even an RV, if it has a receiver hitch, we have a hitch mounted spare tire carrier for your vehicle. Basic hitch mount spare tire carriers, although sometimes marketed as front carriers, install in any 2” receiver hitch, front or rear. They’re made of heavy-duty steel that has been powder coated to provide a durable, corrosion resistant finish. The slots in the wheel attachment plate enable the tire/wheel assembly to be easily installed regardless of the wheel’s lug pattern. Some carriers have several holes to accept the hitch pin, so you can adjust the position of the carrier and spare tire in relation to the vehicle body.
When you want the capacity and convenience of a rear hitch mounted spare tire carrier, complete and easy access to the bed or interior, and still be able to tow a trailer, check out our swing away hitch mount carriers. These carriers install in any 2” receiver hitch, and a hitch is incorporated in the carrier so you can tow or install other hitch mount accessories. When access to the pickup truck bed or interior of the SUV is needed, the tire mount unlatches and swings open. Carriers are available that center the spare or carry it offset to the driver’s side to ensure clearance. Up to a 40” spare can be carried without affecting ground clearance, and mounts are available to carry gas cans, containers, and an off-road jack.
Most motorhomes are not set up for carrying a spare tire. If one of these heavy vehicles unfortunately gets a flat, an owner typically depends on a roadside assistance service to change the tire, but if it’s also necessary to purchase a new tire, he is then at the mercy of local tire availability and price. If you’re an RV owner, be proactive with one of our motorhome hitch mount spare tire carriers! By carrying your own spare, you control cost and can get back on the road quickly with the tire of your choice. Our carriers will accept 16” to 24.5” wheels, they incorporate a hitch for a tow bar or other hitch mount accessories, and feature a patented hinge mechanism for easy raising and lowering of the spare.
