Bumper Mounted Spare Tire Carriers
We offer several mounting alternatives when you want to install an oversize tire as the tailgate mounted spare on your rugged off-roader, and they’ll hold the tire securely when there is a modest increase in tire size. But when you want to run really big and gnarly dirt grabbing meats, you need to switch to a bumper mounted carrier. These heavy-duty carriers support the tire on one of the sturdiest components on your rig, the rear bumper, and they’re stout enough to support up to a 40” tire. Plus, the carrier swings out of the way for access to the interior.
The dimensions of considerably large off-road tires can be more than even aftermarket tailgate-mounted carriers are able to accommodate. These tire/wheel combos can also be very heavy and can easily overstress body mounted hinges. In contrast, our bumper mounted carriers are supported by heavy-duty thick steel bumpers, which themselves are bolted to the strongest part of your machine – the frame. They’re adjustable to handle even the largest diameters, and many bumpers are curved in at the top for additional tire clearance.
Our bumper mounted spare tire carriers have the toughness to securely hold a big off-road spare no matter how rugged the trail gets, yet still provide all the convenience of the OE carrier. When you want to open the tailgate for cargo loading and unloading, just unlatch the carrier from the bumper so it can swing out. To handle the weight of the spare the carrier pivots on heavy-duty bearings and a sturdy vertical axle shaft. You get ample tire support without any sag, so the carrier latches perfectly every time. While most carriers only pivot from one side, for select applications we offer dual post bumpers that allow you to mount the spare on either side of the vehicle.
If you spend most of your time rock crawling and run really big tires on your rig, we also offer another spare tire carrier solution – swing down carriers. These carriers pivot on 2 lower mounts and attach with pins at the corners of the body. They’re designed to provide as much rock crawling clearance as possible, and mount the tire up high and close to the body. Yet even if you run tires as big as 42” in diameter, these carriers are easy to use. When you want to lower the tire just remove the pins and swing down the carrier. And instead of having to grapple with a huge, heavy tire when it’s time to mount it on your rig, just slide the tire onto the carrier and raise it into position. These carriers are made of light weight, heavy-duty tubing, and some models include an integrated skid plate.
It’s easy to get jammed for space in a Jeep or SUV when you’ve got friends along and their gear, but you don’t want to get stranded because you had to leave important equipment behind. Many of our bumper mounted spare tire carriers can help you transport off-road necessities because they have available mounts for carrying a gas can, Rotopax containers, and an off-road jack. This way you can take everything you need to be prepared for emergencies without having to cram it into the cabin. And because an oversize spare can obscure your license plate, we offer relocation brackets that allow you to mount your tag right on the tire where it’s clearly visible.
But if you find chrome and vintage styling more appealing than the latest powder coated tubes, and you’d rather be cruising the boulevard instead of tackling a dirt trail, we have a bumper-mounted spare tire carrier for your ride. The continental kits that were popular additions to cars in the 1950s, like the 2-seat Ford Thunderbird, were the inspiration for our classic spare tire carriers. These universal fit carriers allow the spare to be carried in style on the rear bumper of just about any car, resting in a bright bumper-mounted extension that also mounts the license plate. The tire is safely protected in a sturdy plastic enclosure that can be painted to match your car. All mounting hardware and wiring for the extension mounted lights are included.
Bumper mounted spare tire carriers are sold as a set that includes the bumper, or the carrier may be sold separately. With the latter scenario the manufacturer may offer one carrier and a range of bumpers to which the carrier can be mounted. You may have a choice of full-width or stubby, rock crawler or tubular, or another bumper style so you not only get a strong spare carrier, but a bumper that suits your taste and the way you use your rig. Upgrading to an off-road bumper has a number of advantages beyond the tire carrier. Our bumpers are much tougher than OE bumpers and typically have off-road necessities like welded D-ring mounts. Most have built in receiver hitches for towing or carrying accessories like a bike rack.
