One of the vital components to the safety and functionality of any vehicle, a clutch is responsible for the transfer of power from the engine to the transmission, and to separate the engine from the wheels during changing gears. Many late-model vehicles come equipped with a hydraulic clutch system rather than a mechanical one. In most cases, the piston in the slave cylinder will press on the fork, which in turn will push the release bearing to disengage the clutch.
