Although around since the 1950s, the modern era of the Chevy Impala didn't begin until the model's seventh generation in 1994. Branded the "SS," it was equipped with a small-block 5.7L V8 capable of 260 horsepower and featured a sport-tuned suspension along with 17" wheels. While seen as a niche car for custom-minded motorists, this series of the Impala SS only carried on for a few years. It wasn't until 2000 when Chevy brought the Impala back to its roots. Built on GM's 2nd Generation W platform, the eighth-generation Impala premiered with the choice of two V6 engines and showcased front-wheel drive. In 2002, the Chevy Impala became available in two trim levels, base and LS, with the LS getting the option of a beefier V6, standard antilock brakes, remote entry, traction control, leather upholstery, and a bunch of power-enhancing parts. That same year, an LS Sport version of the model appeared, showing off such accessories as a chrome exhaust tip and a front-bumper extension.
2004 welcomed in a redesigned Impala SS that received power from a 3.8L supercharged V6 generating up to 240 horsepower. A special Police Package Impala was also released for various law enforcement and fire departments. It wasn't too different from the base Impala, but it did feature a stiffer suspension, revised powertrain Chevy Impala parts, and the same V6 as the SS. The ninth-generation of the Chevy Impala rolled off the line for the 2006 model year. The base Impala uses a 3.5L V6 good for 211 horsepower, while the 2LT and LTZ show off a 3.9L engine (233 HP). At the top is the SS, which features a robust 5.3L V8 capable of over 300 horsepower and 323 pounds-per-foot of torque. While upper trim levels offer various safety upgrades and luxury amenities, all versions of the Impala get a four-speed automatic transmission.
The Chevy Impala has become a fixture in racing as the brand's NASCAR representative, taking over for the Monte Carlo. It is also the car driven by four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. The Impala has been recognized throughout the industry as one of the most alluring full-size sedans on the road and plenty of awards have come the model's way. It has been named a Consumer Guide Best Buy (2000) as well as having been nominated numerous times as Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year. Business Fleet magazine named the Chevy Impala the Fleet Car of the Year (2006, 2007) and Forbes.com called the Impala “Detroit's best-selling car” in an article dated February 2007.
One of the most prominent names in American full-size sedans, the Chevy Impala holds a record that is impressive, functional, and flexible. While it may be easy on the eyes when packaged correctly, an Impala performs like a big-game pitcher in the World Series. Punchy, dynamic, and sustained - you normally don't get this kind of power from a full-size, and that has been one of the earmarks that have made this series so enticing. From NASCAR champions to the everyday driver, Chevy's Impala has always made an impression.
