Released for the 2004 model year, the Chevy Colorado stands as the automaker's compact pickup, taking over for the S-10. It is built on GM's GMT355 platform along with the GMC Canyon, Isuzu i-Series, and Hummer H3. With compact/light pickup trucks becoming more popular entering the 2000s along with the S-10 fading away in favor of the Silverado, GM needed to remain competitive because foreign names like Nissan and Toyota moved in on American soil with their own compact variations. The Colorado proved to do the job right off the bat, selling over 245,000 models in its first two years on the road, featuring underhood parts of unrivaled quality, and garnering attention throughout the industry. The Chevy Colorado won the IntelliChoice Best Overall Value of the Year award (2004) along with being named Best New Truck by MI Auto World Magazine (2005).
The Colorado is available in standard cab, extended cab, and crew cab. Extended and standard cabs showcase 6' beds while the crew cab models offer 5' of cargo space. Standard cabs feature a bench seat that can fit up to three passengers, while the extended version can cram in five. The crew cab can seat six passengers. As for the power, the Colorado can be equipped with several engine configurations, including a 2.9L inline-four cylinder (185 horsepower), a 3.7L five-cylinder (242 horsepower), and a 5.3L V8 capable of 300 horsepower along with 320 pounds-per-foot of torque. The four-cylinder engine can be directed through either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual, but the five-cylinder and V8 are only available with the automatic gearbox. Front-wheel drive and Chevy Colorado 4x4 versions were available.
Currently, there are three trim levels for the Chevy Colorado: Work, VL, and LT. A tilted steering wheel, air conditioning, and cruise control make up the amenities for the VL and Work versions. Not much changes with the VL aside from cloth seating and a longer list of additional accessories. The LT trim offers power-enhancing Colorado parts under the hood and higher-quality materials inside the cab with a premium audio system and is only obtainable as a crew cab. While overall sales figures of the Chevy Colorado have slowed over the last few years (not surprising given the segment and the auto recession a couple years back), the hauler has still managed to stay afloat thanks to consistent performance ratings and driver-loyalty. The Colorado has hung in there, showing remarkable reliability and like almost all Chevy trucks, enjoys a large range of options on the aftermarket, including Chevy Colorado parts.
