Nothing beats a soft top on a 4x4 when it comes to appreciating the commanding view with which your vehicle is blessed. However, the tops themselves must be a certain size and shape by necessity. A shape which makes them more prone to wear and tear than typical passenger car convertible tops. On the highway at speed, sides of the soft top pull inward pretty hard at higher speeds, collapsing or bulging as pressure differences fluctuate between the cabin and outside. Open the windows, and the top section also sucks inward against support members. Add non-stop flutter in the wind because 4x4 soft tops are as non-aerodynamic as they come, and sections begin to stretch out of shape and stress stitchwork to the point of failure.
The pounding of the sun also takes a big toll on vinyl, zippers break down from stress and corrosion, and acid rain causes discoloration. Inevitably, tops become torn from branches which are going to scrape or fall against your roof. Maybe that bulky TV set you'll haul for a friend will tumble off the seat and puncture soft side sections or windows. If you've got an older Ford Bronco (through 1977) or Toyota Land Cruiser (through 1984), take a look at the Bestop Supertop Classic complete soft top kit with industrial strength stitching and sealed seams to ensure sections hold together for the long term and provide water-tight protection. Both TrekTop soft tops come with a tailgate bar which serves as a support shelf for the rear window when the tailgate is swung open beneath it.
What's the difference between the Trektop Classic and NX versions? The Classic does not use bows and frames for support underneath the top section. Instead, the Jeep's own roll bars are used for support - creating a smooth, seamless look along the roof. The NX version does have arch bars that span across the width of the vehicle, however the front part of the top can be folded back to create a sunroof effect. If you've got a 2004-2006 Jeep Wrangler 2-door Unlimited model with a 10" longer wheelbase and 15" longer overall length, both of these Trektop versions are sized for it along with Bestop's Supertop NX and Replace-A-Top fabric-only top.
Other Wrangler and CJ soft tops designed to fold halfway back for a sunroof effect are the Bestop Sunrider and Pavement Ends Flip Top. Because these tops are specifically engineered to minimize wind noise and top flutter when open, you'll find riding with the roof part-way open in this fashion is very pleasing. After sliding back the front part of the roof, there's no need to physically remove any sections from the vehicle.
