The Nissan Altima first appeared on the scene in 1993. Based on the Bluebird, the model started off as an efficient compact referred to as the Stanza Altima. The first generation was powered by a KA24DE I4 DOHC engine with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Handling was seen as a clear advantage for the Altima, as the suspension consisted of struts featuring stabilizer bars at both ends. The Altima came in four trim levels: XE, GXE, SE, and GLE, which was the most luxurious offering. The GXE was seen as the mid-level trim and showcased power windows, color matching speakers, and a digital dashboard clock. The SE showed off fog lights, a rear spoiler, side skirts, and 4-wheel disc brakes while the upscale GLE package took it a step further. The Altima GLE offered adjustable lumbar support, automatic climate control, a sunroof, keyless entry, color matching mirrors, and a CD stereo. Right from the start, the first series of the Nissan Altima was a success and the varying trim levels plays a crucial role in attracting a wide demographic of drivers to the up-and-coming model.

Like the first generation, the second generation Nissan Altima was styled by the company’s California design center. Changes initially included an improved, roomier interior with a folding back seat as well as de-powered airbags. Nissan Waits for the Results of the NHTSA Investigation

The 2007-2008 Nissan Altimas are now investigated by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), a safety agency of the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government. The investigation was started on the 23rd of May, 2011. 20 consumer complaints, received by the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), became the ground to start the probe. 18 out of 20 Altima's owners reported about the illuminated dashboard warning light, that informed the driver about the low level of brake fluid in the brake master cylinder. The remaining two reports stated about the reduction in the brake effectiveness. 16 out of 20 complaints were received in October, 2010. According to the preliminary estimation about 440,000 of the 2007-2008 Nissan Altima models may be affected. Those drivers, who brought their vehicles to the Nissan Dealer, informed the ODI that there was a leakage in the brake master cylinder. Several other drivers mentioned that brake fluid was leaking into the brake booster assembly. This leakage in its turn makes the brake warning light stay on. According to the NHTSA, none of the received complaints contained the information about injuries or crashes, caused by the investigated problem.

It is the second investigation for Nissan vehicles from 2007 and 2008 model years. Last time it was Nissan Sentra of the same model years with the same problem. The report, made by the NHTSA after finalizing the investigation, stated, that the recall should be ordered. As for the Nissan Altimas, the probe, opened by the NHTSA in May, is just the investigation. The final report will state whether the recall is found to be necessary.
