Many drivers focus on the engine's horsepower and torque when judging a car's performance. However, these figures only matter if the power is transferred to the ground properly. Any engine has a "powerband," which is the range of RPM at which it runs with maximum efficiency and produces optimal power. Gear ratios ensure that the engine stays within its powerband across a range of speeds, allowing your vehicle to accelerate from a standstill, travel at highway speeds, and more. Through gear changes, the transmission system delivers the appropriate amount of power to the wheels in all driving situations.

At some point, your gearbox will require maintenance. For automatic transmissions, this involves either a fluid change or a complete system flush, as well as transmission filter replacement. Manual gearboxes also need fresh fluid at recommended intervals, and your clutch is subject to periodical replacement as it experiences a lot of wear, especially if your shifts aren't silky smooth. Whether you drive a stick-shift car or an automatic, we have a large selection of quality transmission parts to keep this critical system in top condition or to make repairs if something goes wrong. We have the correct components for a variety of applications, from older Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 transmissions to GM's successful 4L80E transmissions to late-model systems.

From Overhaul Kits to Rebuilt Transmissions

If your tranny needs a makeover and you have the mechanical knowledge and skills to do the job yourself, here in our store you'll find the right transmission rebuild kit to restore its performance back to a high standard. Depending on your goal, you'll get all of the components needed for a quality repair or upgrade. We have overhaul kits that come with all gaskets, O-rings, and seals to replace worn-out “soft parts.” The most comprehensive AT kits are called master kits and they contain clutch plates, bands, bearings and bushings, a filter, and seals and gaskets. And of course, we carry a wide range of individual parts like valve bodies, shift solenoids, modulators, and more.

Alternatively, if you prefer a fast and simple repair solution to labor-intensive work, going with a replacement transmission assembly may be the ideal choice for you. No need to take chances with used transmissions, without any knowledge of previous use and repair history. A reliable and money-saving alternative is a remanufactured gearbox. The replacement transmissions that we offer here in our store are not just rebult, but remanufactured to high standards: all worn and defective components are replaced with new, and factory flaws and weak points are addressed to prevent known failures. These assemblies undergo strict testing to ensure reliable performance and lasting durability.

Issues with worn gearboxes such as slip, rough shifting, and small leaks can be temporarily alleviated with specially-formulated transmission additives. One popular product is the Lucas Transmission Fix, a thick solvent-free fluid that can be mixed with your existing transmission fluid. The viscous additive helps increase line pressure in a worn system, creates a polymeric coating on components, and softens seals. This formula can be used to reduce slippage, improve shift quality, and stop seal leaks.

Torque Converter Is the Heart of Your Automatic Transmission

In most vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, a torque converter serves a similar function to a clutch in manual cars – it lets the engine keep running even when the wheels aren't moving. This complex component is a fluid coupling between the engine and gearbox. The torque converter is filled with transmission oil. Inside its housing, the input turbine fan, which is energized by engine power, forces the fluid to move around and set the output turbine fan in motion, transmitting power to the gearbox.

Some converters, known as lock-up torque converters, use a clutch “that physically links the impeller and turbine, effectively changing the converter into a purely mechanical coupling.” This design helps eliminate slippage, which improves fuel efficiency and prevents heat damage. A torque converter is a durable part, but it may fail due to lax maintenance, low fluid level, or overloading as a result of heavy use like towing. Common signs of failure include slippage, overheating, abnormal changes in stall speed, fluid leaks, and noise. A faulty torque converter clutch may cause shuddering.

Performance Transmission Parts: Gear Up for Upgrades

Your stock transmission is engineered to handle the output of a stock engine. Add considerably more power to that mill under the hood and it will cause major damage to the OE gearbox. In some cases, even an incremental bump in power may dictate the need for gearbox upgrades. We have suitable parts for nearly every high-performance application. Whether you are building a track car, upgrading your truck or SUV for serious off-roading, or prepping your tow vehicle for the demands of pulling heavy loads, we have the performance parts you need. Check out the options we have, including but certainly not limited to:

  • Transmission coolers. High-performance use and trailering can heat the oil to extreme temperatures and cause a breakdown. An auxiliary cooler can save the life of your tranny;
  • Short-throw gear shifters for manuals, AT shifter kits that provide the flexibility of shifting an automatic transmission manually, and ratchet shifters for racing use;
  • Shift kits for firmer shifts, more efficient gear switching, and longer-lasting components;
  • Performance clutch kits. These are comprised of beefed-up clutch discs, pressure plates, and bearings, and many also come with a flywheel. These kits are designed for different HP increase levels and applications and offer improved clutch engagement, higher torque capacity, and better heat dissipation.

Back to Factory Feel
The clutch set works flawlessly, just like the factory one. If you're looking for OEM quality and don't mind the cost, this is a solid choice.

Handles Power Like a Champ
The pedal feel is heavier but not unbearable and it grabs so much better than stock. Engagement is smooth, it feels way more solid than the stock clutch. So far, it's holding up great with my stage 2 setup.
