When we think of common suspension wear parts, struts and shocks come readily to mind. Like filters and brake pads, these components were not designed to last the life of the vehicle and so require periodic replacement. After so many miles their deterioration results in a rough riding vehicle that no longer handles crisply, and new shocks and struts are needed to restore handling performance and ride quality. But the mounts where struts and shocks attach to your vehicle can also wear, fail and require repair.
Strut and shock mounts not only provide the attachment points for struts and shock absorbers, they also insulate the vehicle from vibration and road shock. The insulating component is usually rubber bonded to metal, and the rubber can split, crack, harden, or otherwise deteriorate and create excessive clearance and metal-to-metal contact. This can result in noise, steering and handling problems, and in the case of struts, which are also structural suspension members, wheel alignment that is out of spec.
Most cars on the road today are equipped with front struts and some have them in the rear. The upper strut mount retains the coil spring and connects the strut to the body. In addition to providing an insulating layer, front strut mounts often have a bearing where the strut pivots as the vehicle turns. Worn strut mounts are common causes of noise, poor steering response or binding, and improper alignment. Struts also have boots covering the shaft and these can tear, allowing dirt to score the shaft and ruin the upper hydraulic seal. A bumper surrounding the shaft prevents the suspension from bottoming out, and this can split and allow the strut to be damaged.
If worn strut mounts are suspected, the vehicle should be road tested and checked for noise and steering pull or binding. While parked, turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop and again check for noise and steering abnormalities. Visually check the rubber on the mount for cracks and separation. Raise the vehicle, allowing the wheels to hang, and grasp the coil spring close to the mount. Push the spring and strut in and out while checking for excessive movement. Any defects require replacement, but it’s a good idea to replace the upper strut mounts, boots and bumpers any time struts are replaced, for a complete repair. Our complete strut assemblies come with all of these parts already installed.
Some vehicles have known shock mount wear issues because of rust, design defects, or other problems. For these cars and trucks we have replacement mounts that come complete with hardware and everything needed for the repair. They’re manufactured from premium grade aluminum or steel and powder coated for durability. These parts are designed to save time and money, so you can repair your vehicle inexpensively and get it back on the road fast. In addition to mounts, we also offer replacement shock absorber bushings as well as insulators, spacers, and suspension related hardware that will help you make a successful repair.
