The brand was created as a Rancho Jeep Supply and in extremely short period of time became a flourishing performance suspension components manufacturer. 1988 is remarkable for initiating a product which really soon would become one of the best-sellers of the company – the shock absorber RS5000™.

In 1990 Rancho faced a new step of development as Tenneco Inc. purchased the company. This event caused a growth of popularity of the brand as by that time Rancho included the world's first five-way adjustable shock absorber. This allowed off-roaders to adjust the level of compression/rebound damping to suit their style of riding. The same year the RSX shock absorber, which was supposed to be the first "intelligent" shock, was originated.
