Custom Side Scoops

In addition to the spoilers, ground effects, and other wind-cheating parts that help it slice through the air and hug the track, a typical road racer will also have air scoops at various places on the body that channel air to components within the car. Of course, we’re all familiar with the concept of using a hood scoop to funnel cool air to the engine intake to increase horsepower, but just as the engine’s cooling system keeps it within an optimal temperature range, scoops are also used to direct cooling air to components that would otherwise fail if their temperature were not reduced.

A tremendous amount of heat is generated in the brakes and in the engine, transmission and differential oil when a car is driven at or near maximum speed during a long race. Scoops located on the bumper and on the sides of the body duct air to the brake assemblies and oil coolers to keep component operating temperatures within a range that will allow them to function properly, so the car can perform to its potential and of course, finish the race. Some cars also have side scoops to channel air into or extract it from the cabin to help keep the driver cool.

Like many body modifications originally developed for the race track, most production car side scoops are non-functional and designed to give the car a performance image more so than capability. But there are exceptions. Some Corvettes came from the factory with functional brake scoops and ducts, and some Shelby Mustangs had scoops that used the venturi principle to pull air from the cabin. And while it’s relatively easy to cool and duct a fresh air supply to an engine located in the front, when the engine’s mounted in the rear it often relies on side scoops for cooling and its source of intake air.

The average street car isn’t driven hard enough to need a differential oil cooler or additional brake cooling, and most modern cars have air conditioning making scoops to vent the cabin also unnecessary, so most of the side scoops we offer are also non-functional. But you can still count on awesome performance looks, and unlike functional scoops there are no holes to cut or ducts to route. Most of our scoops attach easily with 3M adhesive. They’re made from strong, durable materials like carbon fiber, fiberglass, ABS plastic and urethane, and paintable to match your vehicle’s finish. Some scoops can be ordered pre-painted to match your car’s finish, so they’re ready to install right out of the box.

Our scoops come in unique, custom styles as well as replicas of the air grabbers that came on your favorite performance model. If you want to give your ride a new and different look or make it resemble a supercar we have the side scoops to make it happen. But in addition to our add-on scoops, we also have scoops to upgrade the ones that were installed at the factory.
