The Land Rover is known worldwide as a four-wheel drive car brand that has a significant off-road heritage. The Land Rover Discovery is a mid-size sport utility vehicle manufactured by the British automaker Land Rover since 1989. There are four generations of the car. The first generation Land Rover Discovery shared its chassis and drive-train with the Range Rover and became the only Discovery generation equipped with 4-cylinder engines. The vehicle was available in a 3-door and 5-door version both fitted with 5 seats. In 1989 the Discovery won the British Design Award. The Land Rover Discovery entered the American market with the 1994 model year. The American version was available with a V8 engine only. In 1995 the 3.5L V8 engine was replaced with a 3.9L Rover V8 engine, and later a 4.0L engine with GEMS system was offered as well.
The Discovery Series II made its debut in the United States in 1999. A new 5-door SUV came as a modified version with 720 differences. Although the exterior and interior parts were re-worked, the vehicle was similar to the previous Series I. The Discovery featured new 4.6L Rover V8 engine, traction and hill descent control. In 2004 the Land Rover unveiled the Discovery 3, known in North America as the LR3. The Land Rover LR3 was the first vehicle in the Land Rover lineup to be provided with a rear locking deferential. The integrated body frame and ladder-frame chassis ensured balance between performance and agility. The vehicle came with a fully independent suspension. For the American market the Land Rover LR3 was offered with the following engine choice: 4.4L V8 petrol engine of 300 hp or 4.0L SOHC Ford V6 petrol engine of 216 hp. A 6-speed automatic transmission was standard. The new electronic systems included dynamic stability control, four wheel electronic traction control, and Terrain Response system.
In North America the Discovery 4 came under the Land Rover LR4 name and made its debut at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. Now the vehicle is available in GS, XS, and HSE trims. The American market Land Rover LR4 is powered with a new 5.0L Jaguar AJ-V8 engine with direct petrol injection producing 370 hp. A ZF 6-speed automatic transmission comes standard. The electronic handling system is updated, the unique Terrain Response system remains, and a new Trailer Stability Assist system is offered. The advanced communication technologies include hard disc navigation system, Bluetooth® Connectivity, portable audio interface, and DAB radio.
Land Rover has attained a lot of success by blending luxury with off-road capable vehicles; no easy task considering that those are certainly two terms not normally in congruency with each other. The Discovery embodies the trademark Land Rover traits. Uncompromising versatility against the elements, delightful off-road maneuverability, and a luxurious ride inside the cabin. Its boxy yet smoothly contoured exterior parts are still prestigious. Whatever terrain it comes across, the Land Rover Discovery makes for an impressively fashionable ride, especially when equipped with the right accessories and parts.
