Introduced for the 2004 model year, the Ford Freestar rolled off the line as a versatile seven-passenger minivan poised to take over for the Windstar. It was offered in three primary trim levels: base SE, SEL, and Limited. The Freestar was also available as a cargo van. The Freestar measured in with a wheelbase of 120.8 inches, a width of 76.4 inches (upped to 76.6 two years later), a height of 68.8 inches (increased to 70.6 inches in 2006), and an overall length of 201 inches. Inside the model was 135.7 cubic feet of space and a foldable third-row seat. Although minivans were beginning to be phased out more and more as the 2000s kicked in, the Freestar was still received with substantial success, and in its first year was nominated for the prestigious Motor Trend Car of the Year award.
The Ford Freestar was powered by a 3.6L V6 engine capable of approximately 193 horsepower and 240 pounds-per-foot of torque. On SEL and Limited trims, a 4.2L V6 good for 201 horsepower and 263 pounds-per-foot of torque was offered. Both engines were mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and used front-wheel drive. For the base SE, air conditioning, remote entry, power accessories, and a CD stereo were all included into the list of standard Ford Freestar parts. The SEL took it a step further with a power driver's seat, second-row captain's chairs, and tri-zone air conditioning. And for the top-shelf Limited trim, automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and chrome alloy wheels were part of the package.
One facet in which the Freestar was a huge success was its safety rating. The model earned a perfect five-star score in frontal crash tests. Stability control and front airbags were standard Ford Freestar parts while optional side-curtain airbags were offered, as well and considered an important addition to the model's safety complexion. Due to heavy competition from the booming compact crossover segment and sluggish sales, Ford discontinued the Freestar come 2007. Despite its limited run, the Freestar made its mark and was duly recognized throughout the industry owing to the top quality of the ford Frestar parts, sleek styling and accessories, and wonderful handling. In its first model year, the Freestar was named the AAA & Parents Magazine Best Vehicle for Families. In 2005, Consumer Guide said the Ford Freestar 'boasts laudable safety & convenience features plus lots of cargo space'.
Aided by a pleasant cabin and decent "giddyup" on the highway, the Ford Freestar is one minivan drivers have remained loyal to. In an age when everyone wants their vehicles to come in neat packages, the Ford Freestar delivers thanks to top-quality design along with a high safety rating.
