The Ford Fiesta premiered on the North American market twice, first in 1978 (discontinued in 1980's) and then in 2010. The vehicle is designed in accordance with the Ford's new global B-car platform and produced for European, Australian and United States markets. Ford Fiesta was shown as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007. Production of the Ford Fiesta started next year in Germany. At the Los Angeles Auto Show in December 2009, the Ford Fiesta was represented as sedan (four door) and hatch back (five door) fitted with dual-clutch automatic transmission.
In Europe, the Ford Fiesta became available in 1978 with 1.1L and 1.3L petrol engines and in the following models: Ghia and Base. On the United States market the Ford Fiesta appeared in 1978 and was represented in the following trims: Base and Decor, Sport and Ghia. The last one was the highest level of trim. All the U.S. models were built in Cologne, Germany and featured a powerful 1.6 L Kent (97 CID; 1597cc) engine. Compared with the European models, the U.S models were provided with the optional air conditioning and fitted with a catalytic converter and an air pump that reduced the emissions level. Also, the U.S. models featured the energy-absorbing bumpers, side-marker lamps, round sealed-beam headlamps, improved crash dynamics and fuel system integrity according to the requirements for the car import to the US. The Ford Fiesta was discontinued in the U.S. in 1981. The older generations of the Ford Fiesta were manufactured for the non-U.S. markets and quickly made an impression thanks to automotive efficiency and comfort. In 1997, the Fiesta won the South African Car of the Year. The fifth generation Fiesta is notable for having more improvements to parts and accessories than any previous Fiesta.
The Fiesta's glorious comeback to the U.S. market started with the sixth generation, which was an international model marketed in European markets and Australia. The new Kinetic Design of the Ford Fiesta stands out for dynamic style, enhanced with advanced technologies and sleek accessories. The new Ford Fiesta was presented as a 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan with the following innovations: 4-wheel anti-lock braking system, power folding mirrors, 4-speed automatic transmission, TCS traction control, electric power steering, seven passenger airbags, trip computer, Bluetooth with voice control and Electronic Stability Program. The new Ford Fiesta demonstrates the next generation of automotive efficiency and also represents a balance of economy and comfort, function and design.
In 2008, the Ford Fiesta became the "Scottish Car of the Year". The Ford Fiesta was awarded as the Car of the Year and Best Supermini by Auto Express magazine in August 2009. The Ford Fiesta has become the first mini car to achieve Top Safety Pick according to the results of crash testing conducted by U.S. IIHS. The 2011 Fiesta fought Nissan Leaf (2 hybrid electric vehicles) and Chevrolet Volt (2 plug-in electric vehicles) in the Green Car of the Year contest held by the Green Car Journal in November 2010.
