In 1981, a two-door model got a 2.1L five-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission and was sold as the Audi 4000 5+5. The 5-speed models offered the 4+E badge that means standard four speeds plus an economy gear. Later, the automatic transmission was additionally available for the 5-speed model.

In the USA, the Audi 4000 was sold in 4000S (1.8L) and 4000CS quattro (2.2L) versions. In 1982, the automaker returned to the 4-cylinder version and added diesel and turbo-diesel models. Further in 1984, the 4-cylinder engine was increased to 1.8L. Later, the 4000S quattro, a powerful all-wheel drive version with a 5-cylinder engine, was introduced to the US market. The 1985 model had an excellent corrosion protection thanks to 27-step anti-corrosion paint process and extensive use of galvanized panels. All 1985 models were completely restyled. Front grille, lights, bumpers, trunk, and interior received a new design. The 4000CS debuted in 1986 and came with the standard 5-speed manual transmission. It was a special model produced in honor of the 100th anniversary of the automobile. Also, the 4000CS quattro version was released which got a CIS-E fuel-injected 2.2L I5 gasoline engine with electronic ignition.

The 1986 CS model featured a host of amenities and technology innovations at the time such as trim information computer, heated front seats, power sunroof, etc. The CS quattro received a luxury leather interior. The 1987 model year was the last for 4000s. The 4000 was replaced with a slightly larger 80/90 series in 1988. This reliable vehicle became Audi’s most popular model in America.
