While the functional benefits of fog lights are beyond question, it also cannot be denied that fog lights go a long way toward adding style to the face of your vehicle. Because fog lights are traditionally designed to mount underneath or inside the front bumper cover, their lower position puts them at a higher risk of becoming damaged. Road debris, speed bumps, parking spot bumpers, and high snow often take a toll - damaging fog lights beyond repair.

Damaged Factory Fog Light Assembly
Removable Cut Out Pieces For Fog Lights
Many vehicles without fog lights have removable cut-out pieces should you choose to install a set.

You may not realize fog lights are damaged until you go to turn them on and find them non-functional. Or, you encounter the dismay of a broken lens cover or housing when you're washing your vehicle - an up-close, hands-on labor of love that forces you to discover flaws and problems that you'd otherwise miss. You're going to need a high-quality replacement.

Or, you may have decided it's time to add a set of fog lights to a vehicle that doesn't currently have any. Odds are this won't be as difficult as you think. Many vehicles that weren't originally equipped with fog lights feature plastic cover pieces to conceal pre-cut holes in the front bumper cover that were created just for fog light assemblies.

These cover pieces can easily be removed (or cut out) should you opt to upgrade and add a set of fog lights. If your vehicle doesn't have pre-cut holes, we invite you to read our related article Selecting and Installing a Set of Fog Lights, which serves as a guide for cutting into your bumper cover. It also covers the steps involved with installing new wiring for a set of add-on fog lights.

Installing A Replacement OEM Fog Light

If you're replacing an inoperable fog light assembly with a new one from our selection, you'll have an easy time. Replacement fog lights we sell are designed to use OEM mounting points and hardware, although your kit may likely include new items such as nuts and bolts to make the installation process easier. The job is also made easy by the use of the factory wiring; no need to worry about routing a new harness.

While most fog lights can be completely accessed from the front of the vehicle, some may require you to reach underneath or behind the bumper. Below are some generic steps typically involved with removal and replacement of fog light assemblies.

Step 1

Bezel Trim Piece Removal

You may need to remove the bezel trim piece surrounding the outside of the fog light assembly. Depending on vehicle application, it may simply pull loose or need to be unbolted/unscrewed from the front or rear.

Step 2

Fog Light Assembly Unbolting

Once the bezel cover is removed, unbolt the fog light assembly itself from its mounting brackets.

Step 3

Unpluging Wiring Harness Clip

Pull the fog light assembly out and disconnect the wiring harness clip. In most cases, a gentle squeeze on both sides of the clip will do the trick.

Step 4 (Optional)

Bulb Replacement Process

If your fog light assembly is undamaged and all you need is a bulb replacement, the fog light housing will be designed with access to the light bulb area. This may require a simple twist-off of the top part, or there may be screws to remove. Once you've opened the fog light housing, release clips that hold the bulb socket in place. The bulb socket can then be removed, and a new bulb inserted in place of the old one.

Step 5

New Fog Lamps

Attach the existing wiring connection to the new fog lamp. Before completing the reinstallation, switch on the light to ensure that it works. If the light is inoperative, fault trace as necessary. Install your replacement fog light assembly and reassemble all items in the reverse order of the steps above.

Front fog lights are something that we almost take for granted; we likely pay much more attention to our headlights, and rightly so. But when weather conditions call for their use, fog lights can make the difference between seeing well and barely seeing.

Fog Lights Product Options

If your OEM fog lights are broken, you now have no excuse but to replace the ones which need it. If you are without fog lights but can see where a nice set of factory ones would fit, we encourage you to go for it! The minimal expense is well worth what they bring in style and function.
