About Mercury Cougar

The first Mercury Cougar came off in 1967 as the more upmarket version of the Ford Mustang. Mercury Cougar was created as the more stylish vehicle than its predecessor regarding both interior and exterior parts. The Cougar was created 3-inch longer than the Mustang. Though Mercury Cougar was created with the emphasis on luxury rather than on performance, it left its trace on the American street scene. During the period of its production there were released 8 generations of the vehicles. Each of them can be called unique because every new generation was released facelifted and had various engine packages.

During the history of its production, the muscle car gradually turned into a compact with an underpowered engine. Starting from the first and up to the forth generation Cougars were equipped with a range of engines from 4.7L up to 7L producing power from 168hp to 390hp. Starting with the fifth generation and to the last one, the volume of the engines and the power gradually lessened to 2.0L 160hp, which made the vehicle more environmentally friendly.

After almost 30 years of production, the Mercury Cougar production stopped at the end of 1997 model year. Still in 1999 production of Mercury Cougar and its parts was renewed. The first new model was exhibited in May 1998. Unlike its predecessors, the brand-new vehicle was front-wheel-drive. The new Cougar was a completely new-built car, and in the Ford lineage there were no sister-cars. In addition, the sporty Cougar uses Ford's New Edge design, a styling approach that differentiates it from the competitors.

Mercury has offered a variant of the Cougar going back to the 60's. But the latest version of this sporty and eye-catching model is the one that most of this generation think of when they hear the name. Its ultra-slick body styling has remained one of the hottest exterior designs over the last ten years, securing its status as a blacktop icon. The Mercury Cougar can show off zooming performance when called upon, and is still a threat to more recent cars in its class when dressed up with proper accessories and parts. Holding steady with a taste of flash and luxury, the Cougar keeps making headlines.
