The 2012 Chevy Sonic made its debut with great fanfare at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. The Chevy Sonic is available in two body styles as a four door sedan and a five door hatchback. The Sonic demonstrates a kinship to General Motors models especially to Chevrolet Aveo. In North America, the Chevrolet targets the small vehicle segment of the automotive market. The new subcompact car requires a new name. Therefore the General Motors abandons the Aveo name in favor of a new Chevy Sonic model designated for the North American market. The Chevrolet Aveo name is retained for the models marketed in the Canada and Mexico. The Chevy Sonic is produced at the General Motors Orion assembly plant in Michigan and reputed to be the only small vehicle built in the United States.

The Chevy Sonic is a slightly larger version of the Chevrolet Spark produced for Europe and not available in the United States market. Chevy Sonic shares the following features and accessories with the European Spark: the compact instrument cluster module, cockpit with a two-tone design, comfortable class-leading rear seat and rear door handles that are set into the side graphic. At the same time Chevy Sonic has a more substantial look. The join between the hood and cabin seems more conventional compared with the Spark. The power- train of the Chevy Sonic and its parts are sized appropriately for the United States market.

The Chevy Sonic continues unveiling kinship with some members of the Chevrolet's family. Thus the Sonic has the same engines used in slightly larger Chevy Cruze. The standard Ecotec 1.8-liter four cylinder engine produces 135 hp and can be paired with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged 1.4-liter engine makes 138 hp and it is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission. This turbocharged engine offers competitive fuel economy and 18 ponies more than the Ford Fiesta rival. A MacPherson strut front suspension ensures a sporty ride. All Chevy Sonic models are equipped with electronic power steering and StabiliTrak electronic stability control. List of the optional Chevy Sonic parts includes USB/Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, remote engine start and a sunroof. The standard safety features and accessories are anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, ten air bags and OnStar offered with six months turn-by-turn navigation and automatic crash response.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Debuted

The subcompact vehicle that was known as the Chevrolet Aveo is now the Sonic. Debuting in 2011, the second generation Aveo is marketed globally as the ''Chevrolet Aveo'', but Chevy marketing team has decided to replace the Aveo nameplate in North America and Mexico with new Chevrolet Sonic moniker.

Coming as either four door sedan or five-door hatchback, the Sonic was officially unveiled at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Under the hood the Sonic has a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 135 horsepower or an optional turbocharged 1.4-liter motor producing 138 horsepower. The vehicle comes with a five-speed manual gearbox and six-speed automatic transmission to choose from. The automaker says that the 2012 subcompact Sonic will achieve up to 40 mpg highway when it hits the market.

The new Chevrolet is more than 2 inches longer in wheelbase than current Aveo. The new vehicle features stylish dual-element grille, motorcycle-inspired twin-headlamps, and round tail lamps. Both versions ride on 17-inch alloy wheels. As for the interior, it was modified to provide more space for the passengers. Chevy Sonic comes with a sunroof, heated front seats, and a number of other options including Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
