Today's automotive industry geared towards electrification saw several attempts at creating an electric pickup truck by converting an already existing platform. Workhorse Group was the first original equipment manufacturer to go further – Ohio's vehicle electrification company has built the plug-in electric pickup from the ground up. And, with Tesla's all-electric truck scheduled for production in several years, it has no direct competition yet. Unveiled at CES in the beginning of 2018, the Workhorse W-15 was primarily designed for fleet customers, which means it prioritizes reliability and durability over style and performance specs.
Workhorse Group's truck can go 80 miles on electricity. It utilizes a 60 kWh Panasonic battery pack with usable capacity limited to 40 kWh for less strain in heavy-duty fleet operations. There's also a gasoline-fed 1.5-liter 3-cylinder internal combustion engine under the hood, but it isn't used to send power to the wheels. It serves as a range extender, generating 50 kW for battery charging or powering the vehicle's electric motors when the battery runs low. By continuously charging the battery, it provides additional 310 miles of range per tank. The Workhorse W-15 features a 7.2-kW power exporter that provides electricity to run on-site tools.
The body of the W-15 is based off a Chevy Silverado, but a strong yet weight saving steel ladder frame chassis was purpose built by Workhorse. With a towing capacity of 5,500 lb and payload rated at 2,200 lb, the W-15 is a true pickup truck. Two 172-kW electric motors, front and rear, allow for full-time all wheel drive and active torque vectoring, providing decent off-road prowess. The truck's power system makes 460 horsepower in total, enough to take it to 60 miles in 5.5 seconds. The motors can also act as generators to provide electrical energy to the battery pack under regenerative braking.
Workhorse W-15 parts of the body are made from plastic reinforced with carbon fiber, which together with a specially engineered chassis keeps the truck's weight as low as 5,000 lb. The center of gravity is low as well, resulting in solid handling. Inside, Workhorse W-15 accessories and parts create a simple and comfortable work environment, with large buttons and supportive seats. There's a touchscreen with an intuitive interface that is simple to operate even if the driver is wearing winter or work gloves. On the list of standard driver assist features, there will be emergency braking, collision warning system, and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. And for those who demand more from this work truck, here's our selection of Workhorse W-15 accessories and parts to choose from.
