The S90 was a nameplate briefly applied by Volvo on its upper-trim line in the late ‘90s. Volvo introduced the nameplate on the selected markets in order to change the old three-digit nomenclature in favor of the new: a letter followed by a two-digit number, the scheme utilized by the company until nowadays. The S90 was the renamed 900 series, produced since 1990, and featured no considerable innovations as compared to the parental model. It was marketed in the USA only for the 1997-98 model years with the only electronically controlled Aisin 4-speed automatic transmission available, and was soon succeeded by the newly-developed S80 that is offered currently.
