Agile and toylike, the Scion iQ is a three-door hatchback subcompact introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in 2008. Though the European sales began in 2009, the supermini reached the North American shores only in 2011. With its fuel efficient iQ, the brand targets urban-dwellers and aims to rival such vehicles as the Ford Fiesta, Fiat 500, Mini Cooper, Smart ForTwo, and Mazda 2. Being only a bit longer than 10 feet, the iQ is more than a foot longer than the ForTwo, yet 20 inches shorter than the Fiat 500. To keep the length down, Toyota had to push the rims and suspension a bit out of the corners, and relocate the 8.5 gallon gas tank under the drivers' seat. The supermini is termed as a 3+1 seater. It was designed so that the front passenger seat could be slid far forward to allow an adult passenger occupy the rear seat. As for the +1 seat behind the driver, it can accommodate a child but definitely not an adult. When the second row passenger seat is in use, there is only 3.5 cubic feet of cargo space, yet when it is folded the storage space reaches 16.7 cubic feet. Other Scion iQ parts where you can store your belongings are four 25-ounce door containers, as well as one cupholder in the center and two rear cupholders in the rear console.

The front-wheel-drive Scion iQ is powered by a standard 1.3 L, 4-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. The engine is capable of 94 hp and 89 lb ft of torque. Its suspension is a mix of torsion-beam axle in the back and MacPherson struts in front. Rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II), the iQ returns 36 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. This kind of power and efficiency is adequate for the around-town commuting, and at the same time, it makes the car feel solid enough on the highway. The safety features and parts of the Scion iQ are stability and traction control, antilock brakes (front disc and rear drums), and eleven air bags, including separate airbags for the head and knees of both the driver and the front passenger, side-curtain airbags, seat-cushion airbags, and even an airbag for the rear window.

There are no official factory options offered for the Scion iQ, yet Toyota provides an extensive catalog of dealer-installed equipment. The list of optional Scion iQ parts and accessories includes stiffer antiroll bars, shorter springs, body side molding, fog lamps, rear spoiler, and mud guards. The interior options are door sills and interior light kit. As for the standard Scion iQ parts, the subcompact comes with a 160-watt, four-speaker Pioneer audio system with an AM/FM radio, CD player, USB port, HD radio, as well as a built-in hands-free phone connection. The center console hosts the Scion Driver Monitor, which displays the outside temperature, an average mpg and an ECO-drive indicator that helps maximize the vehicle's efficiency. The iQ is also equipped with the standard 16'' rims, full power accessories, air-conditioning, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls.

Essentially designed to be a premium minicar, the Scion iQ might get us thinking a bit different about 'the bigger – the better.' With its world-class materials, improved noise isolation, and a sophisticated feel, this subcompact offers much more than the rivals. Being in fact the world's smallest four-seater, the Scion iQ uses a lot of innovative solutions to overcome the inconveniences associated with the superminis. Modern, efficient, and funky, this car is a real urban miracle and an ultimate expression of the personal mobility. Of course, it's efficient on fuel. And yes, it has enough zip in the performance to make an impression on the highway. The iQ proves that good things come in small packages!
