As the name implies, an external slave cylinder is mounted on the outside of the transmission bell housing. It acts on a clutch fork that pivots inside the bell housing and contacts the release bearing at the other end. This cylinder consists of few moving parts other than a piston, internal spring, and pushrod. The rubber boot is used to seal contaminants away from the moving parts while the release bearing maintains preloaded contact with the diaphragm spring. However, no matter how well protected an external slave cylinder is continually exposed to heat and road grime, and those factors along with extensive use can lead to failure.
