A driveshaft cannot be directly connected to the output shaft of the transmission and input shaft of the differential since it needs to pivot when the differential moves up and down with the suspension. That is why these components come with universal or other types of joints on one or both ends. Such couplings allow for variations in alignment and even distance between the driving and driven shafts. Long, two-component driveshafts are suspended using center support bearings. Such a component has a metal frame that is attached to the vehicle underbody. The bearing itself is somewhat floating thanks to a rubber damper designed to deal with suspension and drivetrain movements.
