No matter which type of racing activities you prefer, you need to make sure that your axle shafts and related components are strong enough to handle extreme loads while trying to deliver the power of your high-performance engine to the ground. If you fail to upgrade your driveline after increasing the output of your powerplant and installing larger wheels, you may end up with the broken axle on the side of the road. Axle shafts are designed to transfer torque from the differential or transaxle to the drive wheels. Rear axles feature wheel hubs that are mounted directly on the shafts via wheel bearings.
In case of the front end, the drive wheels are mounted to the hubs which are connected to the half shafts via constant velocity (CV) joints. Such a joint enables the wheel to move up and down with the suspension while also allowing it to rotate sideways following the driver’s steering effort. Another CV joint is installed on the inner side of the half shaft connecting it to the transmission. These joints include rollers or balls similar to the bearings that need to be greased to reduce friction and temperature. That is why they are protected with durable rubber boots designed to keep the grease in and dust and other debris out.
To prevent CV-joint grease from liquefying due to high temperature resulting in axle failure, we recommend using special vented boots and high-temp grease.
