Racing Flexplates
A flexplate is a relatively thin metal disk installed on the engine’s crankshaft in vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions where a flywheel would be in the case of a manual gearbox. On the other side, the flexplate is fixed to the torque converter. When compared to the flywheel, the flexplate is much thinner and lighter since it must flex a little forward and backward to compensate fluid pressure changes inside the converter when rotational speed increases or decreases. On the outer rim of the flexplate, there is a line of teeth which are used by the starter to crank the engine during startup.
When a stock-style flexplate is used in a high-power, high-RPM racing application, it can warp and even break when transferring torque from your powerful engine to the converter rendering your vehicle inoperable at the most inopportune moment. For that reason, we recommend replacing your factory-installed stamped steel and welded plates with their billet, machined counterparts. We carry a wide range of racing flexplates manufactured with a high level of precision that also feature extremely strong construction. These products are designed to increase racer and spectator safety preventing pieces of a broken flexplate flying in all directions.
Some manufacturers offer two-piece flywheels bolted together or joined with the use of precise MIG or TIG welding to ensure perfect balance. It is especially relevant for racing-only applications since such flexplates can effectively transfer high engine power to the rest of the powertrain. In our online store, you can find high-performance flexplates, balance plates, spacers, bolt kits, billet conversion flexplates, plate and starter combos, and much more. After installing such products, you can achieve faster and harder transmission shifting without risking to end up with the broken link between your powerplant and torque converter. We have parts for all makes and models, so you can be sure to find the right product for your vehicle.
