Porsche, the German automaker that specializes in the production of high-performance sports cars, sedans, and SUVs demonstrated its intention to release its first all-electric model by unveiling the Porsche Mission E four-door coupe concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. After a three-year research and development period, at the Porsche’s “70 years of sports cars” anniversary ceremony, the company CEO Oliver Blume announced that the production version of all-electric Porsche four-seat sedan would carry the “Taycan” badge. The name can be roughly translated as a “lively young horse,” referring to a black leaping stallion depicted on a famous Porsche shield logo. The arrival of the new model at dealerships is expected in 2019.
The most expensive, premium version of the Porsche Taycan packs more than 600 hp (440 kW) and can speed up to 62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds and cover 0-124 mph in under 12 seconds reaching the top speed of 155 mph. Besides, such performance is repeatable, meaning that the electric vehicle (EV) can do it over and over again without losing capabilities as the battery drains. The less powerful versions (530 hp and 400 hp) will be available too. The battery-powered Taycan is propelled by two (rear and front) permanent magnet synchronous electric motors which are more temperature-stable and power-dense if compared to Tesla’s induction motors. Power is transferred to the wheels through a decoupling clutch at the front and two-speed gearbox at the back to ensure more rapid acceleration. The 800V system supports fast charging and can receive up to 80% of the charge in just 15 minutes. A fully charged Li-ion battery offers a driving range of about 310 miles. Porsche is building a wide fast-charging infrastructure committing to deliver 500 charging stations with contactless payment system across the U.S. upon the Taycan’s arrival at dealerships.
The new model uses the innovative computer brake technology where the brake pedal has no mechanical link to the brake discs. Instead, when pressed, it sends a signal to a computer to calculate whether to engage brake calipers or achieve retardation through motors, which improves efficiency partly recharging the battery. The owners of this model will be able to upgrade their EV with new, better batteries at any time. The body is constructed using magnesium casings, aluminum panels and reinforced steel. The ground clearance is reduced due to the use of lower springs. Inside, almost all controls are in the form of glass touch panels, which emphasized the minimalist look. Porsche executives promised that the Taycan will not be silent. When accelerating, it will make deep, technological noise.
