Unlike the U.S. G5, which was positioned as a sporty-oriented performance car being complemented by numerous rebranded siblings like the Chevrolet Cobalt or Saturn Astra, the Canadian and Mexican counterparts featured a lower base trim level coming in a 4-door sedan body type. They were offered as affordable family cars rather than compact sports vehicles. However, as well as all Pontiac models of the time, the G5, together with its renamed cousins, was discontinued for the 2010-2011 model years as the Pontiac brand was ceased.
