Vehicle & Parts Protection
The Mercury Monterey is a minivan based on the Ford Freestar. Both vehicles shared the design borrowed from the Ford Windstar. The Mercury Monterey was produced in three trim levels: base Convenience, midline Luxury, and top-shelf Premier. The only engine available for all trim versions was a 4.2l V6 producing the power over 201hp and equipped with 4-speed automatic transmission. AWD vehicles were not offered.
All Montereys were equipped with various safety systems: antilock brakes, tire-pressure monitor, and front/rear obstacle detection, side-curtain air-bags were optional for convenience model but standard for the other two. The only seating package for all Montereys was a three-row seven-passenger setup with flip-and-roll 2nd-row buckets and a 3rd-row bench that folded into the floor. The seat could also be flipped backward for seating beneath an open liftgate when the vehicle was parked. Power-sliding doors were standard except for the Convenience trim model.
All Montereys included a dual-zone climate system with rear controls, and a power driver's seat. The Luxury model included such Mercury parts, as power-adjustable pedals, power front-passenger seat, leather upholstery, front-seat heating, a memory system for the driver's seat/pedals/mirror position, and an automatic climate system. Heated/cooled front seats were standard for Premier. A power liftgate was added during the model year as standard for Premier and optional for Luxury. Rear DVD entertainment was an option except for Convenience model.
Combining equal parts efficiency and sportiness, the Mercury Monterey is a vehicle that withstands the true test of time. You could put this machine in virtually any era and it will still be relevant. What makes the Mercury Monterey so special is the versatile image it holds, especislly when fitted with the right accessories. Sure, it's got an appealing look to it as well as enough performance to make an impression on the highway. But it is also economical and comfortable, surpassing the rest of the field.
