Officially, the Mercedes E Class entered production in 1993, when the car received this nameplate, but it actually traces its roots to 1984, since it was one and the same Mercedes W124. The W124 took its power from a 3.0 L 12-valve SOHC I6 gasoline motor rated at 177 hp, or a 3.0 L turbocharged I6 diesel engine with 148 hp, both directed through a standard four-speed automatic. Like the current CLS Class model, it is represented by a four-door sedan, a five-door station wagon, a two-door convertible and coupe. A new smaller 1.8 L turbocharged I4 was added to the big range of power plants. The new E Class was released in 2016, including a hybrid version and replacing a 5.5 L V8 motor with a 4.0 L V8.
