Since its debut in 2003, the Mazda 6 has been one of the Japanese automaker's most recognizable models. The Mazda 6 is a sporty and affordable midsize based on Mazda's GG platform along with the CX-7. The Mazda 6 was originally offered only as a sedan. However, the hatchback and wagon versions of the car became available a year later. The sedan is known as the Sport Sedan in North America, while the hatchback (5-door) and wagon version (Sport Wagon) are also marketed according to their respective body styles. There are two trims for the Mazda 6, the “i” and the “s”, with the difference resting on the engine. Models with the “i” prefix received the 4-cylinder engine while the “s” models are equipped with a V6.
2006 ushered in the Mazdaspeed6, a high-performance edition of the vehicle. The engine was a turbocharged 2.3L direct fuel injection unit (originally rated at 274 HP but has since been altered to 270 HP). The Mazdaspeed6 also features a raised hood, 6-speed transmission, and four-wheel drive. A year later, the second generation of the Mazda 6 was released after making its premier at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It is now produced off of the GH platform, a descendent of the previous GG chassis. The Mazdaspeed6, despite its level of popularity, was not initially renewed for the North American market. There are currently seven different trim levels available for the Mazda 6: the i SV, i Sport, i Touring, i Grand Touring, s Sport, s Touring and the s Grand Touring. All “s” models are powered by a 3.7L V6 (272 horsepower) while the “i” models are equipped with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine capable of 170 horsepower.
2009 has seen another redesign of the Mazda 6 parts. The North American version of the vehicle is slightly larger, as Mazda wanted to offer a heftier sedan to satisfy consumer tastes. Internationally, the Mazda 6's wheelbase is over two inches shorter and narrower by more than two inches, as well. In North America, engine options range between a 2.5L 4-cylinder and a 3.7L V6. The Mazda 6 has been a steady stream of success for the Mazda brand. Sales have been strong, as the model has been consistently rated at the top or near the top of its class every year. The Mazda 6 has been voted to Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list and has received numerous other international awards, including Best Business Car (Business Denmark, 2006), Executive's Car of the Year (CAGI, 2006), and was also named to the Editor's Most Wanted Vehicles list for Edmunds.com (2007).
It is easy to see why the Mazda 6 has become one of the most popular midsizes on the block. The curvaceous body style and other Mazda 6 parts give the ride a look that is dynamic, tasteful, and intriguing. Regardless of trim level, the Mazda 6 doesn't hold back either, offering more standardized amenities for its class than any other model. Drivers of the Mazda 6 always like to point out how their cars handle like a dream, putting yet another checkmark in the vehicle's column. Top to bottom, the Mazda 6 performs well above its competition and with an added touch, the sky's the limit.
