The Lexus GX is a midsize luxury SUV that was released in 2002 in anticipation of the 2003 model year. It first premiered at the 2002 North American International Auto Show before eventually becoming Lexus's third SUV to enter the roster. At its launch, the Lexus GX was outfitted with a 4.7L V8 engine (hence the model's first trim, the GX 470) capable of approximately 240 horsepower mated to a standard five-speed automatic transmission. Inside the model was enough space to fit up to eight passengers thanks to two rows of seat with an optional third row. As for the model's dimensions, the Lexus GX measured in with a wheelbase of 109.8 inches, a width of 74 inches, a height of 74.6 inches, and an overall length of 188.2 inches. For its second year on the road, the GX 470 received a slew of changes in the safety department, as Lexus upgraded the vehicle with side-curtain airbags, a backup camera, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
In 2005, Lexus introduced the Sport trim, which showcased distinctive styling cues such as a chrome license plate trim, headlight bezels, alloy wheels, and an exhaust tip. The interior of the Sport featured wood trim among other aesthetic updates. Base GX 470 models were available with other options including Bluetooth and a new navigation system. The engine saw a boost for this model year, as well, getting a bump up to 270 horsepower (up from the previous number of 235). Toyota didn't bring on too many changes for 2006, but in 2007, the GX 470's navigation system became improved with voice activation and the rear entertainment system's video screen was increased to 9 inches wide. 2008 welcomed in minor exterior alterations, but aside from that, all major Lexus GX parts were left untouched. The next year would follow suit. However, for 2010, the Lexus GX was given a thorough redesign.
Two main trim levels were made available for the new Lexus GX 460: base and Premium. The GX's updated powertrain consisted of a 4.6L V8 good for 301 horsepower and 329 pounds-per-feet of torque directed through a six-speed automatic transmission. Base models included a wide array of standard niceties including alloy wheels, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, heated outside mirrors, running boards, a sunroof, leather upholstery, a tilted steering wheel, heated/ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a backup camera. Premium versions of the GX 460 took it up a notch with chrome accents, automatic-dimming side-view mirrors, adaptive xenon HID headlights, a heated wood steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and rear-air conditioning, and a tonneau cover.
Crossover SUVs have become one of the more popular vehicle trends in recent years. The sporty suspensions, increased passenger seating, and modicum of economy have all proven to be factors that have had drivers lining up in showrooms from coast to coast. The Lexus GX gives drivers all of these qualities, but with a gold watch to go along with it. Class emanates from every inch; fine leather seating, elegantly smooth performance, and an innovatively styled console up front all lead to the delicious luxury that the GX delivers. An upgrade over an upgrade, the GX continues to break the mold. While adding stylish accessories and parts, the GX owners make it even more eye-catching.
