The Korean automaker Kia Motors introduced the Kia Spectra as a 2000 model year in November 1999. This compact car went on sale originally only as a hatchback. The vehicle was built as a hatchback version of the Kia Shuma and replaced the Kia's Mentor/Sephia Leo. The small family vehicle was marketed worldwide under various nameplates: Spectra Wing / Shuma II, Kia Spectra or Kia Cerato. In Europe and UK the first generation vehicles were sold as the Kia Cerato, while in the American automotive market it was known under Kia Spectra name.
The first generation Kia Spectra vehicles were offered in the following trim levels: an entry level S, slightly upgraded SX, and the top-of-the-range GSX. The Kia Spectra came as a 5-door hatchback and was based on the previously released Kia Mentor hatchback. Being the Kia Sephia successor, the Spectra shared a lot of common specifications. The engine range included 1.6-liter I4 engine making 107 hp, 1.8-liter I4 engine producing 125 hp and 2.0-liter I4 engine rating 132 hp. The vehicle was offered either with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
The second generation Kia Spectra came in 2004. For the 2004 model year the Kia Spectra parts were redesigned and updated. The new Spectra used the next generation Hyundai Elantra platform and the same engine as the Elantra. A new four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine with continuous variable valve timing produced 138 hp. The front-wheel drive Kia Spectra was offered with either 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The hatchback version was on sale as a 5-door Spectra5, which was known as the Kia Cerato in Australia, Korea and Singapore. The Kia Spectra5 was available in the North American market, while in UK and Europe it was replaced with the Kia Ceed. In 2006 the American version of Kia Spectra came with GEMA engines and a mid-generation face-lift. In 2009, the Kia Spectra came as a sedan in LX, EX and sporty SX trim levels. All models were available with a 138-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and manual or automatic transmission. A high level of standard safety equipment included the ABS, side curtain airbags and four-wheel disk brakes. The Kia Spectra vehicles were provided with air conditioning, power locks and heated mirrors, power windows and remote key-less entry. The Kia Spectra was replaced with Kia Forte, that debuted at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show.
Whether in sedan or hatchback form, the Spectra is a comfortable compact that has leveled the playing field. Kia has went on a rampage in recent years thanks to parent company Hyundai, and has redesigned a sizeable portion of its roster. The Spectra is no different. Now plusher than ever, drivers have the newfound ability to cruise with up-tempo performance and confidence, something that many take for granted. Featuring neatly styled exterior parts, the Spectra can also be quite the looker when dressed up with stylish accessories, adding a different twist to an already dynamic and respected vehicle.
