The Isuzu Trooper was manufactured by the Isuzu automaker between 1981 and 2005. The Trooper was marketed worldwide under various nameplates: the Isuzu Bighorn, Chevrolet Trooper, Honda Horizon, Subaru Bighorn, Acura SLX, Caribe 442 and Holden Monterey. In the North American automotive market, the mid-size sport utility vehicle was sold as the Isuzu Trooper II (1983-1989) and the Isuzu Trooper (1990-2002). In compliance with the working arrangement between Isuzu and Honda, the latter gained the right to sell the re-badged Trooper and its parts. The sport utility vehicle was named the Honda Horizon in Japan and it was known as the Acura SLX in the American market in 1996-1999.
The first generation Trooper was offered as a 2-door or 4-door SUV with an independent front suspension and a four-wheel drive system. The engines range included 1.8L 2.0L and 2.2L diesels. The improved 2.3L engine was introduced in 1986. Later, the first-generation models came with 2.6L fuel-injected engine and 2.8L V6 engine, 4-speed automatic transmission was included into the list of optional Isuzu Trooper parts. The middle size SUV was exported to the United States in 1989. In the American market only 2-door models with short wheelbase of 90,6 inch were available. The Trooper was offered with a 2.6 liter fuel injected 4 cylinder engine. The vehicle was equipped with 31x10.5 tires fitted on 15x7 aluminum alloy wheels of snowflake pattern. Both the automatic and manual transmissions were available.
For the second generation, the Trooper parts and accessories were completely redesigned and the model came as a more luxurious and more powerful SUV. Three trim levels were offered: S, LS and SE Limited. The new 3.2L SOHC V6 engine rated 190hp and replaced the prior engines. A part-time 4-wheel drive system was available. While 7-seats model and 3-door versions were sold in Europe, the American Troopers came only as 5-door and 5-seat models. A limited slip differential was optional on all models. In 1996 a re-badged and upgraded Isuzu Trooper came under Acura SLX name. It was only sold in the United States market. The vehicle was powered with a 3.2L V6 gasoline engine producing 190hp. Since 1998 the Trooper was manufactured with a 3.5L dual overhead cam 6-cylinder engine rated 215 hp. The 4-door SUV was equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive were available. The all wheel drive system came with torque on demand, offered by Borg Warner Inc. In 2000 the Acura SLX production was discontinued. In 2002, the Isuzu ceased exporting the Trooper model to the United States.
The Isuzu Trooper is a pioneer. One of the first SUVs around, the Trooper is a classic by name alone. Big and burly, all of the space and power a driver needs without trailing a flatbed is available with the Trooper. The Trooper dishes out enough raw power on the road to make much needed headway. Backed by its surly performance comes the rugged handling-implemented just for those drivers who like to make off-roading an option. With a model like this, you have to look at the history. The Trooper is still a strong performer that put Isuzu on the map.
