At the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, Hyundai introduced the sporty Veloster concept car, a three-door, glass-roofed hatchback that shared its platform with the Hyundai Accent and Hyundai Elantra. And in 2011 the company unveiled its revolutionary 2012 Hyundai Veloster, a sporty three-door compact coupe, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Veloster replaced the Hyundai Tiburon that was discontinued in 2008. Its name is a combination of words 'velocity' and 'roadster' and it is used to underline the sporty character of the vehicle. The Veloster features one door on the driver side and two doors on the passenger side. Such configuration makes the rear-seat access more comfortable and safe. The handle of the rear passenger door is hidden to maintain the coupe design.
Under the hood, this sporty car holds a direct injection 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 138 hp. A six-speed manual gearbox comes standard, while Hundai's first dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters is available as an option. The Veloster combines the functionality of a hatchback and the style of a coupe. The vehicle is 166.1-inch long and 70.5-inch wide. It rides on a 104.3-inch wheelbase and weights 2,657 pounds. The priority on weight reduction allows the car to deliver a great combination of performance, agility, and fuel efficiency. A turbocharged 1.6L Gamma GDI version of the Veloster was unveiled at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. It was offered with a V6 gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine producing 208 hp. The motor was mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
The Veloster features Pandora internet radio with seven-inch touch-screen display included into the list of standard Hyundai Veloster parts. Hyundai's new BlueLink telematics system, similar to the OnStar infotainment system used on General Motors vehicles, provides customers with car protection, diagnostic, automatic crash notification, and SOS emergency assistance to name a few. The Veloster optional package includes such accessories as the piano black headlights, body color handles and mirrors, dual exhaust, fog lights, chrome grille surround, and a panoramic sunroof. The vehicle rides on standard 17-inch alloy wheels, and 18-inch wheels with painted inserts come as an option. The vehicle is available in Century White, Ironman Silver, Triathlon Gray, Ultra Black, Marathon Blue, Electrolyte Green, 26.2 Yellow, Vitamin C, and Boston Red exterior colors.
The ''New Thinking. New Possibilities'' slogan embodies Hyundai's goal of offering premium products at an affordable price. The Veloster intends to compete against such vehicles as Honda CR-Z, Mazda 3, and Volkswagen Golf. The three-door coupe beats the competitors in most categories including rich design, tasteful style, and unrivaled safety. The vehicle features sporty and stylish design that still allows the drivers to add their own touch by customizing the Veloster in the right way.
