Unveiled at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Nexo is Hyundai's technological flagship that leads the company's lineup of eco-vehicles. It is the fuel cell electric vehicle conceived to replace the Tucson FCEV. Unlike its predecessor that is built upon extensively modified Hyundai Tucson underpinnings, the newly-introduced fuel cell crossover SUV uses a specially-built platform. Hyundai's first dedicated fuel cell architecture provides substantial improvements over the previously used system, including lighter weight, faster acceleration, and more interior space.

The Hyundai Nexo is bigger than the vehicle it replaces, while utilizing a lighter and better packaged powertrain that provides an increase of 27 hp and 70 lb-ft over the previous generation system. Its more powerful permanent-magnet electric motor now gives out 120 kW (161 horsepower) and 291 lb-ft. This power is supported by a more capable 40-kW lithium ion battery and a 95-kW fuel cell, resulting in a total output of 135 kW. Fuel cell vehicles have never been considered to be fast machines, but the newly developed technology takes acceleration up a notch. A claimed 0-60 time of the Nexo is 9.5 seconds, which definitely beats its predecessor's result of 12.5 seconds. The most impressive technical improvement is the driving range – the new Hyundai Nexo is good for 370 miles compared to now-modest 265 miles between fill-ups that the Tucson could provide. There are now three hydrogen tanks instead of two, each designed to store 52.2 liters of hydrogen fuel. The freed up space was used to relocate the battery pack from the floor to the trunk. Hyundai Nexo parts have been improved to properly work in temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees Fahrenheit.

State-of-the-art tech continues inside the cabin – the Hyundai Nexo offers a range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The industry-first blind spot monitoring system dramatically expands visibility for safe lane changing by utilizing wide-angle monitors on both sides of the crossover. Semi-autonomous safety features include lane following and highway driving assistants; the former helps keep the vehicle centered on the lane, while the latter automatically makes speed adjustments based on map readings and the information from sensors. The crossover can also park itself autonomously thanks to Remote Smart Parking Assist.
