Hyundai's first full size luxury entrant, the Hyundai Genesis has been an impressive machine right from the beginning. The Genesis presents a luxurious package at an extremely affordable price in comparison with the traditional nameplates that typically dominate this segment, such as Lexus, Cadillac, and Mercedes. Hyundai began planning the model in 2003. With a team of designers as well as a half-billion dollar investment, it took three years for the company to develop a concept vehicle. The Genesis concept was finally unveiled in 2007. Aside from its sporty features, the Genesis also received a five-star crash rating in every major category from the NHTSA, keeping in line with Hyundai's recent reputation for safety-first vehicles. There are currently two trim levels for the Hyundai Genesis: the 3.8 and the 4.6, both of which correspond with the type of engine for that model. The 3.8 goes with the 3.8L V6 while the 4.6 is married to the 4.6L V8.
The base 3.8 engine kicks off with 290 horsepower and a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The 4.6L V8 turns it up a notch and shows off 375 hp with a 6-speed ZF 6HP26 automatic transmission to go along with its deluxe packaging. Thanks to an impressive level of performance, the Hyundai Genesis 4.6 showcases more performance than the Lexus GS 460. Rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes, and multi-link suspension complete the drivetrain and are included in the list of standard Hyundai Genesis parts. The Genesis offers a wide range of amenities, even in the entry-level 3.8. Heated leather seats, satellite radio, dual-zone climate control, and a seven-speaker stereo system, all come as standard Hyundai Genesis accessories. With the 4.6 Genesis, drivers receive more styling cues such as chrome trim, 18" alloy wheels, a wood steering wheel, and a Lexicon stereo system that features fifteen speakers. Other optional parts and features are Bluetooth compatibility and GPS navigation with real-time traffic updating.
The Hyundai Genesis has delivered quite an impact in a short amount of time. In December 2008, one of the worst car sales months in over a decade, the Hyundai Genesis sold over 1,100 units, a remarkable feat considering the circumstances. It hasn't hurt that the car has been roundly lauded by most major automotive publications throughout the industry. Edmunds.com awarded the Genesis a 9.5 out of 10, proclaiming that the Genesis "offers genuine opulence at an unbelievably low price, and credibly competes with premium sedans by Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti and Lexus." The Hyundai Genesis was also named a Consumers Digest Best Buy (2009) and a finalist for Motor Trend's Car of the Year. Of all the accolades the Genesis has received, perhaps the most prestigious title it has been bestowed with was being named the 2009 North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show. This honor highlights not only the model itself, but also Hyundai's achievement in a highly competitive field.
