The Honda CR-Z is a compact hybrid electric automobile by Honda. Marketed as a "sport hybrid coupe," Honda CR-Z debuted as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 23, 2007. The name CR-Z indicates 'Compact Renaissance Zero' – an idea of the compact car renaissance, yet at a completely new fundamentals of fuel economy and modern “green” technologies. The main idea was to produce the new compact car to be sporty, premium efficient and inexpensive. In America the Honda CR-Z first was represented at the 2008 International Auto Show in Detroit. It became available in 2010. In the U.S. as one of the less polluting vehicles available, Honda CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) as defined by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). CR-Z is the only gasoline-electric hybrid model offered by any automaker that can be equipped with a manual transmission.
The new Honda CR-Z exterior accessories demonstrate the inspiration by the second generation Honda CR-X. Late 80's and early 90's this model was a success due to addition of the sporty parts to the Honda CR-Z and yet incredible fuel economy of the vehicle. The new CR-Z combines traditional elements of the sports car and the hybrid technology. Representing the third generation of Honda's hybrid electric vehicle on the market, along with the Insight and Civic Hybrid. The compact electric hybrid was offered in the following configurations: base, EX and EX with navigation. Standard equipment is 6-speed manual transmission, the CVT transmission is available in the list of optional Honda CR-Z parts. The car is powered by a 1.5L LEA I4 SOHC 16-valve i-VTEC gasoline engine and an electric DC brushless motor – the MF6 Model, outputting14 hp at1500 rpm with 58lb·ft of torque @ 1000 rpm. The hybrid system provides a combine output of 122 hp at 6000rpm. The gasoline engine itself rates only 111hp. The high efficiency and fuel economy are obvious. U.S. EPA fuel consumption ratings are 31 MPG (35 MPG with CVT) for city and 37 MPG (39 MPG with CVT) for highway.
The traditions of Honda design unveil in the wedge shape of Honda CR-Z parts, the massive snout and the high split-glass hatch. To create the sporting feel, the new CR-Z is equipped with such sporty accessories as sporty seats and dashboard, the leather wrapped steering wheel of a rather small diameter and textured aluminum pedals. The driver is provided with easy access to all control systems: standard climate controls and optional navigation, as well as the driving mode selectors. The Honda CR-Z was rewarded as Japan Car of The Year 2010-11 and 2010 Good Design Award from the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization.
The CR-Z has become a favorite for those who care about the planet, yet hate to be bored. This car gives you the joyful sporty spirit, keeping your conscience clear with it's “green philosophy” and your wallet protected with one of the highest MPG ratings among sport vehicles. What more can you wish for? The signature touch, shared with its CR-X predecessor gives the CR-Z a true identity and has propelled the model quickly to worldwide popularity and acceptance. Taking a path of classic models' revival which proved to be effective with Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, Honda decided to stake on bringing back its well-respected classics.
The Honda CR-Z is a compromise between powerful sporty drive and fuel-efficiency of the gasoline-electric hybrid sports vehicle. Designed as a sport hybrid coupe it continues Honda's tradition to keep an eye on the future.
