The GMC Sierra began production as a permanent full-size offering in the late 1990s. Based on the same GMT800 platform as the Chevy Silverado, the GMC Sierra features a lot of the same top-quality characteristics along with a number of unique luxury options. The light-duty GMC Sierra is the 1500. It's available in a 2-door short cab, 3- or 4-door extended cab, and front-hinged 4-door crew cab body styles. Its bed is available in three different variants: short (69.2"), standard (78.7"), and long (97.6"). The first generation of the Sierra is also rear-wheel drive with 4-wheel drive as an option. In 1999, its redesign saw the addition of Quadrasteer as the 4-wheel drive system for both trucks and upgrade of some of GMC Sierra parts and systems. The grille was changed and new interior trim was employed as well. The Sierra was first available only as the regular cab and 3-door extended cab truck. Engine options included a 3.3L Vortec 4300 V6, 4.8L Vortec 4800 V8, and 5.3L Vortec 5300 V8.
The Sierra HD is a heavy-duty version of the truck. It is available as the Sierra 1500 HD, 2500 HD, and 3500 HD. The 1500 HD was powered by a 6.0L Vortec 6000 V8 engine making 300 HP and mated to a Hydra-Matic four-speed transmission. The GMC Sierra 2500 HD was powered by a Duramax V8 engine producing 360 HP and offered towing capacity of 650 lbs. It was also available with a Vortec 8100 V8 engine making 340 HP. The GMC Sierra 2500 HD was equipped with an Allison 1000 five-speed transmission (six-speed transmission was available for 2006-07 models). The GMC Sierra 3500 HD uses the same engines and transmission as the 2500 HD, although features twin rear wheels and stiffer suspension. Sierra HD trucks are usually preferred by those who regularly transport a substantial amount of cargo. The 1500 HD has a towing capacity of 10,300 lbs., while the 2500 HD provides towing capacity of 16,100 lbs. and the 3500 has a towing capacity of 16,700 lbs.
In 2006, the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado were moved to the GMT900 platform for the 2007 model year. The redesign included changes to the GMC Sierra exterior design, such as a more aerodynamically shaped body and refined grille. It also features improved Sierra parts such as reinforced suspension and more powerful engine options. The GMT900 Sierra is powered by a generation IV small block V8 engine and features an Active Fuel Management system, which shuts down half of the cylinders in order to conserve fuel. The 2007 GMC Sierra also comes with two different dash choices. One is a dash that is more luxury-oriented and shares the same features as those found in the GMT900 SUVs. The other one is a "pickup" dash that displays more upright angles, which offers more room in the cabin.
The GMC Sierra crams a mix of authoritative presence, big-time toughness, and smooth performance into one big, stylish package. The Sierra has been molded out of the successful GM platform that also spawned Chevy's revered Silverado, and both share many of the same traits. The Sierra hosts all of the modern amenities normally reserved for high-end sedans. Backed by conscientious handling and unbridled power, the GMC Sierra is the lion that knows how to prowl.
